No meat today

If you're not disputing my surprised reaction to the mention of animals pertaining religion then I have no argument with you.

So you dismiss out of hand the idea that some other animals may have religion? I was not suggesting that other animals definitely do have religion, but that they may.

What's the benefit?

Respect for someones else's beliefs/practices? Showing a little self control for 1 day of the year? You don't have to practice it and it doesn't hurt anyone.

What's the benefit if you posting on this forum? What's the benefit in you breathing?

Etc..

Never heard of no meat on good Friday, ever, and I was in a roman catholic school since I started school.

Very surprised by that!

I am a catholic and i guess a hypocrite too ;)
I dont go to mass at all, but every good friday, i never eat red meat.

Why is it okay to take the **** out of a Christan thread but a Muslim thread would be watched and dons heavily moderate it

wtf clearly you didnt learn anything

Bit of an unfair question isn't it - you're asking him to speculate and then saying that without proof it's not as valid. Religion does exist and it has shaped elements of the world for better or worse, whether we would have developed a sophisticated morality without it is purely theoretical - my suspicion would be that we would have had to if we wanted to form a useful functional society, a lot of the basic moral principles of religion are pretty fundamental to a society and sensible for that reason. I'd go further and suggest that in the scenario where religion doesn't exist for us to be having a similar debate about morality would have to mean principles of the same ilk would require to be in place so again it would come back to pre-requisite conditions being fulfilled to even have the discussion. However I can't support that view much further given that religion does exist so it's academic what the world would be like without religion.

It is not an unfair question as the statement made was not speculative but done so as if it were fact......I would suspect that religion or at least the manifestation of it or similar social constructs or related spirituality is as inherent to the Human condition as is morality itself.....one often cited example of an atheist culture growing in isolation is the Pirahã, however they are not atheist as they have a deep spirituality and the uniqueness of their perception is not that it is atheist as it is not, but that they have a very personal and real (at least to them) relationship with their spirituality outside of the artificial constructs and rituals we associate with organised religion or even what we would consider personal history and personal experience. Much of what we would consider to be important to out identity and our humanity is striped away with the Piraha People, and yet their spirituality remains, even within the limited personal experience that they have constructed culturally.

I don't think they would heavily moderate it? But perhaps they'd be concerned about terrorism, who knows. This thread basically is just people saying they're eating bacon, I don't think that's taking the **** to a great extent!

Not at all incited by you telling everyone on the board (regardless of faith it seems) not to eat meat. A provoked reaction if ever there was one.

No meat on Good Friday? Do the religious people still believe all this ****? What the fish freaks gonna do when they peg it and they realise there isn't a God?

People do not understand the limitations or assumptions of science and this isn't a small minority either. It's a huge issue and can be seen in the hundreads of religion vs science threads.

Many people don't, I agree. I am not religious, not spiritual, and I answer the questions I have about life with science. I am well aware of what we know and what we don't know as far as science is concerned.

What do I satisfy my spiritual 'gene' with?
