2GB Vram The Minimum. Really?

I'm going to resist the incredibly sarcastic comment I was going to put and stick with;

Yes I did have a 560ti, OC'd to 950mhz - I had to turn down multiple settings to get smooth gameplay on the larger maps like caspian, which is the same findings as HardOCP in their multiplayer speed tests (and nvidia in their BF3 tweak guide)

I also tried 560ti SLI and found it no better than a single one because - as I determined through testing - it wasn't a GPU limitation causing me massive stutter and low FPS on Ultra, it was VRAM limitation

when I then saw another user with 2GB SLI posting 60-70+FPS I knew for certain it was VRAM limitation

I did also try a friends 570 in my PC and that wasn't a massive amount better than a 560ti - FPS was a lot better but it still suffered stutter quite badly

even a GTX580 1.5GB gave me occaisional stutter and the guy that sold it told me it was BNIB but it wasn't so I sent it back and around the same time spotted a 3GB for £330 which was a bargain at the time, and luckily that does now give me a stutter free experience

but then if you'd read your own thread you might have read some of this already (sorry, I couldn't actually not be facetious at all)

It's cool mate. Maybe I am just less fussy and what I deem acceptable, another person will find unaceptable.

For me though, I was quite happy with the frame returns however since upgrading to a 680, I can see a massive difference.

It is not a fair argument as we all accept things differently.

That being said, I agree that 1GB is pushing your luck at Ultra in BF3. For other games though? Generally fine.

1.5GB? Although people post VRAM usage above 1.5GB I think this is due to the caching mentioned previously.

I can only go by my personal experience, and mine was that a 1.5GB card still suffered from occaisional texture streaming - that is sometimes when I turned fast I could see textures appear

it annoyed me and drove me to buy a 3GB card

I didn't want to accept lowering settings or putting up with it, but that's just me, I totally understand people who can't justify spending money on a minor annoyance or to whom it actually isn't an annoyance

Not all setups have noticeable microstutter. And it's certainly not all games that show it. Also highly depends on your multi-gpu config, fps, vsync and other factors, there have been a few people around here explaining how microsttutering works and it is something that you can experience on any card, at any time.

Well with Vsync on they can't see any tearing as there isn't any.

They wouldn't be hitting 100 fps on 60 Hz monitors then, though.

The prime reason to uncap the framerates is to reduce the input lag.

I'm not one to hate on people who enjoy playing on consoles. Haven't noticed any games grinding to halt on consoles, either.

Don't see the issue then.

What baffles me is why you relate vsync to stuttering.

I honestly can't tell the difference between single mode and Crossfire in relation to tearing, although i play on 120hz which helps it. There was one set of drivers + CAP which was giving me stuttering and jumping but that was quickly fixed with drivers!

I'm a console convert myself, moved over because I thought consoles were starting to look ****! Games like Assassin's Creed and similar games all look **** at 30 FPS and what was the final nail in the coffin was how bad BF3 felt on my PS3, absolutely ****!

1.5GB on my 480 and it decimates games at 1080!

2GB seems to be becoming the average on most cards, but tbh you dont really need more than 1GB...

I'm exactly like you if it comes to those little annoyances and not wanting to turn settings down. I would have already bought myself a 3GB card if it wasn't for my monitor which has a 2560x1440 resolution, I'll need two GTX580 3GB's and that will be a bit expensive so I'm gonna hold out for a 4GB GTX 680 or GTX 690 :)
The stutter, texture streaming and heath of my SLI GTX480 is annoying the hell out of me (even my cat finds it annoying) ! :p

aye, I am considering 1600p (or 3 monitor) and was looking at getting 2-3 GTX580's hoping they would drop to 200ish each

sadly that doesn't seem to be happening so if I can get close to £300 for my card I may well get a 680 4GB and go SLI if I can sneak it past the missus

I think if I syphon £100 a month off in to my paypal account and then the top up from selling the 580 and I'll be golden

Hahah, I can syphon what I want but mine will notice :p

Yeah I think waiting for a 4GB GTX680 is best thing to do! If they are far to expensive can always see what the 3GB GTX 580 go for by then...

Interesting. Not disputing your own personal experience at all but if it truly was a VRAM issue it's the first I've heard of a 1.5GB card being VRAM limited.

or I can just stick it on the credit card - she never checks that anyway so some money per month paying off the credit card I doubt she'll notice either!

Ha ha yeah. Or stick to individual accounts and joint for house/bills. Works a treat :)

I Manned up and told the serving wench I am getting a new card and that is that. After I woke up with 2 black eyes, I said please :p

I have just started playing with my 680 SLi and monitoring VRAM with eVGA precision and on caspian border is hasnt gone over 1240MB and thats playing at 1080p.
