The damn dog (springer spaniel) has just given me a massive bout of rage this morning by running outside and somehow managing to catch a pigeon. Stupid bird just waddled about whilst Tyler (yes, stupid name, but it was already his when we got him) charged at it. He managed to knock it over and then got it on the second pass.

That annoyed my, but it was the lack of wanting to drop the bird to hand and when I commanded him to.

Grrr, dogs!!! Sometimes they are so lovely and other times they take the pee out of you!

Thats set my day up :(

Well, don't be too hard on Tyler (wut?), he's only doing what his instincts tell him. Just hope he didn't catch anything from the vermin.

Have you actually taught him to bring a bird to hand then? or are you just expecting his genetics to do it for you? How old is he?

My snow dog is blowing her coat again atm, so, much hair, arrrrrrrrrrg!

The initial rage got me, and I feel a little guilty for shouting at him and tapping him on the nose when he wouldnt drop.

He is an older lad (9) and when we got him it did take a little bit of persuading for him to drop items when you were taking them off of him, but he is now pretty good at letting things go when you take it by the hand and issue the drop command. Obviously not that brilliant though when the item in question 'tastes just so darn good'.

Nothing to get annoyed with its not as if he has had lots of training at this and you were probably getting all worked up and acting funny which would confuse him.

Having things taken from them is in there nature (you dont want them dropping a half shot bird at your feet for it to try and fly away) but its all down to your training for what he will do.

Less being annoyed at him and more training for both of you.

Yeah, I need to calm down and call his name and them get him to sit followed by the drop command.

Giving him lots of cuddles as I feel guilty as hell for shouting at the wonder dog.

One of my jack russells caught a crow as it was flying low passed him, that was a proper hero move. Can't be annoyed at a dog for killing stuff.

Sounds like Tyler is the leader of the pack

That response is so wrong. I doubt you could have done something to confuse the dog more than that. You can't really expect him to understand what the hell just happened when you're behaving like that.

Cats > Dogs.

I went to visit my girlfriend's Mum with her the other day. She has a dog, it was kind of cute and had personality, but my God it was a pain in the arse. You're sitting watching TV and the bloody thing is in your face causing problems and generally just ****ing you off.

So yes, cats > dogs.

Depends on the dog. Cats are more annoying in my experience. Dogs are generally very excitable when there's someone new around as well, it would soon calm down.

I will think you will find that 'alpha dog theory' is rubbish, so there isn't any issue there. The dog gets fuss on my terms, and in this case an hour after the incident.

this thread needs pics of Tyler (I like the name btw)

Here you go...

Is Tyler working or show line of ESS? It all comes down to training but, generally, the working line will be more responsive than the show variant. In addition, the show line are more susceptible to true rage syndrome.

I'm working on our latest ESS family addition who is 5 months. I'm not too bothered about him carrying fresh meat - it is more when he finds rotting rat carcasses that I get concerned!
