Will I soon regret buying a GTX 680?

Regarding waiting for the next big thing don't. I've been putting off putting a new PC together for almost five years now because of this. I think I've developed a complex and it's rubbish.

I personally think anyone who has bought this gen of cards (by choice) is going to regret it as the next gen is going yield atleast 20% more in terms of performance and it is only few months away...

Can you show me where I can purchase the "next gen" of cards or the release dates please?

I for one disagree with this, as I am loving my 680.

Source please. Best cough up, as there's a few ppl asking for this now ;)

As above 2gb of Vram is more than enough for a current card (unless you plan to run at a very high resolution/multi screen and currently only if you are using custom high memory texture packs and or very high settings in games) and you will be limited more on the GPU's grunt than the available memory in the future. There is always the problem in purchasing a brand new top of the line card that they will bring out an optimised cheaper version with most of the performance in a few months but you always pay $$$ for the latest and fastest. Samrt money has always been to stick a little behind the curve where you get the most 'bang for your buck', depends what you are interested in. Want good performance on a budget then don't by the latest top end card (be it NVDIA or AMD) as you will always get more for you're money a little down the product line. Want the latest and greatest... then be prepared to pay more for it (and maybe suffer a little more buyers regret down the line)

Oh and there is always something better 'a few months away' so if you lived by this principle you would never buy anything!

The reason I ask is that a couple of years ago I was very close to spending £400 on a GTX480 but was then very glad I didn't when the GTX570 came out with very similar performance for a lot less money.

I'm just worried that the same could happen if a newer GTX 770 or something comes out later this year.

Edit: (I haven't bought the 680 card yet)

in short no.

But since you haven't bought it why would it matter.

Isnt the 7990 scheduled for may? hense all of these price reductions? Which will outperform the GTX 680, and so a few months later the new GTX 685 appears?

This is the time schedule for new cards that has been doing th rounds for at least a year. A new card every 6 months is almost inevitable, and as I have said in other threads, it isnt exactly a competitive field at all! Nvidia and AMD are seemingly commiting to a cycle whereby both profit from each others existance and draw out the market for longer. Its no coincidence that both release cards of almost EXACTLY the same performance (maybe 5-10% more than previous per single card), each within 3 months of their competitor.

Whilst forum warriors argue over epeen value of each makers cards, both copany's are laughing all of the way to the bank knowing that they already have the next 3/4/5 cards ready for advancement in the next few months. It is non-profitable to sit on a card for longer than 6 months, and if either company produces a much much better card than its competitor both companies will suffer as a result of lack of competitive push and price fixing.

Cards are used like genitalia extensions. Its all a bit silly really.

The 7990 is AMD's dual-GPU card, as is nVidia's GTX690.

Both casrds will outperform every single GPU card, but will be expensive, power hungry, hot and probably poor clockers compared to the single GPU cards. They are for the willy waving brigade or those who want SLI/Xfire power but only have space for a single card, or those really mad folks who want quadfire (benchmarking only IMO).

There will ALWAYS be something faster round the corner. Fact.

this 20% power increase that the 685 is supposed to have over the 680 is all over the web, we dont need to quote it for you, just Google it yourself.

is it true? well that's a different question isn't it

Googled it. All I could find was forum chatter. Should I try Jeeves?

Just because it's "all over the web" doesn't mean it's reputable. Jesus H Christ :(

Google may be a way to find some information but it least needs to be sourced back to a decent website.

sorry the GTX 685 is supposed to be 50% faster than the 680 :D;)

if it's true i dont know

http://www.legitreviews.com/news/12673/

can I just point out that legit reviews quotes videocardz who quote 3DCenter.org and if you follow the chain back the original table is different to that posted by legit

like a game of chinese whispers, each time it's been reposted it's been mis-translated and edited to suit what the writer wants to portray

if you read the original german you can see that the info in the table is a complete guess made up by 3dcenter.org - it is not quoted as being leaked from Nvidia at all

the only rumour I've seen that quotes an nvidia source says that 685 will be 25% faster than 680, not 50% (which by their own admission 3dcenter have just made up)

For heaven's sake.....

It always is....read earlier post. You could spend 200 trillion pounds on a graphics card today and it will be outdated in 6 months. It has been this way since PC's began with high end components. Why is this such a big bone of contention for everyone, on THIS forum of all places? :D

As for GTX 685 or whatever name has been dreamt up....there are no reputable sources only the usual internet speculatory guff. Pointless even discussing in the context of what to part with your hard earned cash on. The cash is REAL....you can see it and feel it in your hand. The GTX 68whatever guff is pure, fabricated nonsense.

OF COURSE there will be a newer/ better/ faster card....there ALWAYS is! :D
