The latest are "pretty much the same" yes 
It all depends on weather you like to 'mess' about with your phone, i.e. customise it.
If you do, then iPhone isn't really for you, unless you jailbreak it, but this will leave you behind on the latest security/bug updates.
If you just want a phone which you just want to use as it is and not worry about any of the background stuff then i would say go iPhone, but its is just personal preference.
have a play around with them in the shop.
Of course with apple you have the iCloud and iTunes match, but i find them not to integrate as well with windows as they do with mac.
But with android you have more handsets to chose from, possibly a little cheaper. however I don't find the samsungs to feel as solid as an iPhone.

At the end of the day, only you can chose one, and the only way to do that is to try them.
