I Thought I would put this here for anybody thinking about the Samsung 23" 3d 120Hz offer.

Switched it on, 1 dead pixel top left area:(.

Talking about it over on this thread with others that took advantage of OCUk's quite incredible deal:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18330547&page=6

Had a quick play around, here's what I think so far guys:

First things first, as above gutted about the pixel, depends what happens with how the DSR/RMA turns out to be, depends on whether I keep it or not.

It's a lot smaller in size overall compared to my 24" monitor it's replacing, it's very light and thin along with the very thin bevels it looks tiny at first.

Setup was easy and straightforward, first install the driver from the disc.

You need to download 2 files:

1:
http://tridef.com/download/Samsung-SyncMaster-3D-Game-Launcher-TriDef-3D-latest.html

2.
TriDef 3D 5.2 from here:

http://www.tridef.com/download/TriDef-3D-latest.html

1.Install driver from disc.

2. Install TriDef 3D (Samsung 3D Monitor) Samsung-SyncMaster-3D-Game-Launcher-TriDef-3D-1.1.2 (It won't ask but Don't restart(and test that Ignition, etc, work correctly at this stage)

3. Install TriDef 3D 5.2, but untick the "Run TriDef 3D Display Setup" box at the end of installation (Display Setup is not needed and in fact will not work for OEM monitors)

By doing this, step 2 will install the necessary license and set the display mode automatically, then step 3 will upgrade the internal Ignition/Media Player* components to the latest versions.

Media Player* so far it only plays games and view 3D pictures, all of the various movie's I launched, none worked at all , including online clips from Yabazam 3D Movies, with a license not available message.

By this not working, at a guess, the Samsung Tridef license is just for games/pics and you don't get the video licensce(afaik, you get it all with LG).

I changed the original instructions given for the LG to what's needed for the SA700, the original instructions are found here:

http://www.tridef.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2136

Very bright compared to my 24", crisp and clear.

Tried a SBS mkv through WMP and worked well(once you get the hang of the power button on the glasses), you have to manually select SBS 3D in the osd well which is right next to the 'Power Off@ button(:( for me, keep switching it off!)

Games(all in 3D):

Launch the SyncMaster 3D Game Launcher and it gives you a list of games installed, you launch them from here to play in 3D.

You can manually add games too:

First game fired up was Skyrim through game launcher, and loaded last save, I'm standing looking into the College of winterhold main gates and WOW, stunning 3D effect, I was totally taken aback, only had a quick look around but, I wasn't expecting that!

Then Witcher 2, it's not on the list, but you just 'add' it by adding the exe, look on the list it throws up and pick it, as W2 isn't there, you just press ok.

Loads up and again it's stunning, moved around and it is quite weird at first but it really does add a whole new look to your games.

Lastly Crysis 2, add it as above.

Transformed Crysis2 considerably for me, again didn't do much but again it looked good.

The missus had a go and doesn't like it, 'hurts your head', we've seen a few 3D at the movies and she liked it but that was using passive.

After a couple of hours bouncing back and fro between testing 3D/OSD options, heads feeling the strain, hope it gets easier on the head or I'm one of the unfortunates, as I haven't really played anything yet.

Will delve more into it by over the weekend and see what it's like.

As it is I will be sending it back(dead pixel) and if it works out well with OCUk, then it will be replaced.

I haven't played any games without 3D yet, but I'm getting the full 120Hz and can confirm 6950>70 CrossFire's working in 3D!:D.

Will keep you updated on general gaming when I try it out.

I have the samsung 27" and only had a little dabble in 3d, on the two games ive tried mw3 looked rubbish but bulletstorm was fantastic in 3d so im guessing all this 3d is very much game dependent

Quick update on another few games I tried last night.

BF3, launched directly from the game, tried the tank level, HUGE hit in the framerate on full ultra, didn't reduce the settings so I will need to try it again.

Wasn't that impressive compared to the other games tried, but that might be down to the level being pretty bare as it's in the desert.

Bulletstorm, looking very good indeed, very strong sense of depth.

L4D2, on the Mall level with the car that needs filled with petrol, WOW, incredible looking tbh, absolutely stunning.

Still not had a proper play through on anything, still just having a quick look around to see the effects really.

@Cleeecooo, I presume you had to send the monitor to Samsung?

Not to keen on that myself, too much hassle, going to contact CS and see what they have to say on the matter.

Thanks Cleeecooo for the info, was it a long process regarding initial contact to repair turnaround.

I'm also concerned that they tell me it's of 'acceptable' quality since it's only the one dead pixel, whereas doing a DSR is a guaranteed refund.

get DSR sorted, then call Samsung. easier than returning the monitor at your own expense

took twoish weeks for it to be sorted

Was also only one dead pixel with mine :)

Confusing me here:), Organise a DSR and contact Samsung?

Thanks for the info by the way.

Just posted a query on CS, will see what OCUk have to say on the matter.

I've contacted Samsung as one of my 3 monitors has a cluster of a few dead pixels, gave them all the details yesterday so it looks like the replacement shouldn't be too much of an issue :)

My cat has managed to smash 1 pair of the 3D glasses already though which is annoying...

- the 2D to 3D conversetion works great on almost anything, standard 1080p movies worked a treat along with YouTube videos and even pictures!

Did you get the Tridef 3D video player to work with normal avi's/mkv's maxilive?

So far I keep getting a license error even when trying to play a Tridef movie (Tridef format) from the site you get after installing the Tridef software.

I've not tried Tommy, as I haven't updated to the latest version of TriDef so I haven't even got the media player. I've been using another program (name escapes me at the moment) or just VLC player then changing the monitor to side by side or 2D-3D. The other media player would just run standard side-by-side MKVs but would auto switch the monitor to 3D when you clicked the button.

But for the 2D-3D conversion I just used the monitor OSD and VLC to convert 1080p movies to 3D with pretty good results!

Popped a question into OcUK Customer Service this morning regarding the dead pixel situation but so far no reply.

Not that I have used it often but I usually get a very quick response(within 5-10minutes going by previous queries), but so far only silence.

@maxilive, thanks again for your reply, I shall have a go tonight, Cyberlink Powerdvd 12 does a 2D>3D conversion iirc, might give that a try too.

Anyone installed the full 'paid' Tridef software and enabled the Tridef media player?

For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to get 3D to work

Games/movies or both?

Games/movies or both?

both, just tried it now and BF3 doesn't look to bad in 3D. Do you have to turn the options on or off in game? as it didn't make a difference tbh. The tri-def software automatically produced a side by side image. I'd like more of that "eye popping effect" which was non existent. The depth was superb though.

You've convinced me to get these what GPU's are you using and most games running at max settings ?

Just thought I would drop this in here:

What has surprised me the most, is the fact that Tridef just 'works', after all the bad things said in the graphics section of the forum regarding AMD's implementation of 3D, take into account I'm using CrossFire too with no hassles as mentioned in various threads over there(I'm assuming Tridef sorted out the CrossFire problems).

£166(after cashback and assuming you get a good one) for a 120Hz 3D monitor using AMD gpu's is amazing value compared to swapping to the green team and investing in Nvidia 3D surround and being tied to it. :D

which games did you try?
I've been blown away with Metro 2033 and Batman AA. BF3 on the other hand is quite poor imo.

There is a laser sight available via Tridef hotkeys(keypad arrow keys and no.5) for those finding it hard to aim.

All games launched via Tridef game launcher unless stated.

BF3(not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game), very disappointing, thought it would be much, much better, especially compared with the effects on other titles, quite a performance hit too!

L4D2, incredible 3D effect, the best use of 3D of all the games I tried, imo the overall depth, looking into the distance is incredible.

Skyrim, stunning 2nd best looking title for me absolutely fantastic.

Deuss Ex(not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game), it's ok, but nothing special.

BAC, fantastic, not much of a performance hit and Bats looks incredible when you pan the camera around him it has to be seen to take it in.

Dead Space 2, fantastic.

Bulletstorm, very immersive.

ME3, good looking and lots of depth.

F3 NV, great looking.

Dirt 3, (not launched via tridef, 3D applied directly within the game) disappointing as I heard it was very impressive, maybe expected too much.

Portal 2, looks great but I was getting a huge performance hit.

Crysis 2, fantastic, not much of a hit.

Crysis, sore on the senses, it looks great, but I was getting a shimmering effect, maybe have to play about with the settings and there is a considerable performance hit too.

The bad bits:

Brain strain was quite pronounced when I first started using the 3D, but last night it wasn't anywhere near as bad, maybe because I was just playing a game instead of testing(jumping back and forth between titles in 3D to desktop and back again), etc.

EA games are looking to get authorised when launching directly from Origin(probably without Origin too) via Tridef game launcher, not good as it's going to take activations away from you, could cause problems further down the line.

After installing the latest Tridef(on another W7 installation) without the Samsung license(pointed out in an earlier post how to do it), you get the full use, including the media player(whether it's a bug or Samsung don't supply this part of the license I don't know) but the only thing your missing is the Yabazam 3D Movies 3D movies from the site(as you can use VLC, media player etc to watch converted 2D>3D movies).

Alas the monitor is getting DSR'd due to a dead pixel, so I don't know if I'm prepared to take a chance on getting another one incase it has the same problem, it's not a bargain anymore when you have to factor in sending them back out of your own pocket.:(

@as905, does the monitor leg come off the monitor easy enough?

Anyone know the cheapest way to return the monitor?

I looked at DPD's website but they are wanting £20, I will find out how much parcel Force is and the PO for anyone in my situation.
