How do you pull your handbrake up?

Push the button and lift. If on a hill I'll go one click up by just pulling.

What would be the point of needlessly wearing out the ratchet if you don't need to?

button in.
whenever I hear people pulling it up on the ratchet from outside the car, it makes me cringe.

Ratchets don't wear out any more! Does anyone here know of any handbrake failures due to ratchet wear?

The last instructor I spoke to said with the button pressed in it may not catch properly and may not be fully on. It's like people saving brakes by holding on the clutch! Cost of pads vs cost of replacement clutch?

Andi.

Button in then one click at the top to make sure it's all good and not somehow resting on the crest of a ratchet tooth.

Absolutely this. Mate did it to my car once, he was warned he wouldn't be driving it again if I heard him repeat it. :o

push the button in and lift with conventional style handbrakes

I cant on the lexus as its foot operated to apply the handbrake.... but fortunatly it doesnt really make the usual loud ratchet sound

Just to buck the trend, I lift the button up ;)
