NHS subsidised lease cars

Hey, I pay money IN to the NHS, can I have a subsidised lease car?

Subsidised lease cars are offered to essential users - in the same way a company car would be offered to somebody working for a private company doing field work.

Additionally, some trusts run a salary sacrifice car scheme but these are not subsidised by the NHS - the benefit of these is that the money is taken pre-tax and you pay tax on the cars emissions instead of the income tax, so if you take a low emissions car it can be tax efficient.

Don't worry, your tax money isn't letting staff swan around in cheap cars for the lulz.

Is there are website that shows participating PCTs? Or is it a case of contacting your PCT? Im probably going to have to change my car in the next year or so, and being in GP land, i will be commuting loads. Currently travelling 80 miles a day and its really killing my wallet!

Yes its very much a case of asking your HR dept if they run this kind of scheme - and yes as Fox mentioned it runs along the salary sacrifice premise

Our trust has just joined this scheme and quite a lot of people have jumped on the band wagon and got themselves a motor. My manager (Band 8a) has just got an Audi A3 for £240 a month which covers:

• Fully Comp Insurance for up to 4 named people (great if you have young learner drivers in the family)
• Tax
• Servicing (at an approved Audi dealer)
• Any work needed to be done by Audi
• Tyres (take to Kwik Fit / National Tyres and bill it to them)

So all you pretty much do is pay for the fuel, and the contract lasts 3 years. The only downside or bad point I found with this scheme, is that if for whatever reason like redundancies or job loss you have to give the car back, then they sting you for 5 months payments (5 x £240 + VAT) in the first year, 3 payments in year 2, and 1 payment in year 3 so the bill gets quite hefty if you give it back early

Other than that though, its a cracking deal for a brand new car with no worries other than fuel costs.

It's £240 + tax IIRC, but the tax is company car tax not income tax. So if you are a higher rate tax payer instead of paying 40% tax you end up paying much less tax on the amount you would have earnt had you not done the scheme.

If that makes sense.

The main downside is that you can only get rubbish cars on it - like that 2 litre diesel A3 - because anything decent has emissions that are high enough to render the scheme pointless.

Don't forget you'll be getting a much reduced mileage allowance, using her own car my wife gets 59p per mile, using a lease car you get about 8p.
On 3k miles per year you'll be loosing just over £1500.

Yeah I realised this, but I genuinely think I lose money at the moment at 20mpg, semi slick tyres, expensive brakes pads etc.

I'm on 40p a mile plus a £57 regular users lump sum every month.

I work out:

£57 Shell V Power @ 143.9p = 180 miles
Semi slick tyres = £290 for four should last around 6000 miles (time will tell).

Fuel= 31.6p a mile.
Tyres = 4.8p a mile

Add servicing and repairs into the mix, and I'm pretty sure I don't make any money from driving my car at work.

I'd say that I average about 14k a year, so if I can use the Fiesta for 11k a year and the MX5 for 3k a year I think it should save me money even after paying the lease.

My head hurts working it all out.

14,000 miles in the MX5 should cost
Total: £4,340 in fuel costs

vs

(3,000 miles in MX5 @ 20mpg: £930) + (11,000 miles in Fiesta @ 50mpg: £1,350)
Total: £2,280 in fuel costs

An annual fuel saving of £2,060.
The annual car lease is £96*12 = £1,152

So the savings should pay for the car, and give me an extra £908 a year or £75 a month. But then I lose the regular user lump sum of £57 a month...

I *think* I'm going to be saving money every month, with the added benefit of having a second car. It also means I don't have to take the MX5 out in the salt / grit when winter comes around.

Just ordered a mini cooper D thought this scheme ive got the same prices at your first post but be warned they will be different once the final quote come in as per website said mini cooper D with chili pack was £176 but final quote price was £196 plus my extras came to £205 a month

But still worth it from what im paying on the bmw now atm plus still the misses on it and should save a nice penny

Cool, but the quoted prices are what I pay. They revise the quote if I add optional extras.

Thats the quote's from the website which lets you add options which then you update, but that can change when you ask them to bring up a order quote with the lease company i.e Lex or lloyds mine on the website with the quote came out 15 quid cheaper then what the lease company came back with when i told them what i wanted and asked for a order form.

I'd imagine the turbo attached to his mx-5 doesn't exactly help the economy, especially if he is running it rich to allow high boost or whatever. I only get low 30s in mine, even with motorway stuffs.

Surely you wont get 50mpg from the Fiesta if you only get 20mpg from the MX5?

Part of the problem with the MX5 is that it's so much fun to rag about, which results in low MPG figures. I end up going the long way home, boosting about. It's ridiculous!

Sorry for bumping an old thread; my better half has just got a NHS quote which sounds absolutely bonkers to me, and I wondered if anyone could shed any light?

It is presented as follows:

Make & Model
Volkswagen Polo
SEL 1.2 TSI 105
Black

Monthly Payment
319.18

P11D Price
16,341

Private Miles
10000

Business Miles
3600

Taxable Liability
-87.68

She has been told she will have to pay the monthly of £319.18, in addition to getting taxed the extra £87.68; ie a total cost of just over £400pcm. You could buy the bloody thing for those kind of numbers, and you'd own the car at the end of it! Any wisdom an NHS lease driver can offer would be very much appreciated. Thank you all!

That seems extreme, is there a private fuel contribution included in the monthly cost? How does the NHS scheme work do they get a fuel card or do they have to pay up front for fuel and claim back?
