This 2012 M5 was traveling at a top speed (approximately 186mph/300kmh) when the driver lost control of the car as he braked and swerved to avoid a car. As the driver of the M5 swerved to avoid a car which joined the highway aggressively (without noticing the oncoming BMW), the M5 struck the divider, bounced off and shot across the highway, where it flipped several times on the grass at the side of the A81.

The 60 year old driver, 20 year old passenger, and a dog were all seriously injured, but are alive. Judging by the severity of the damage to the car, it's a testament to the M5's safety technology that no one was instantly killed.

The car which cut off the M5 did not stop and fled the scene of the accident. The M6 and M3 on the scene belong to the M5 owner's sons, who were traveling with the M5 at the time of the accident. One of the sons, seeing smoke coming from the M5's engine after the crash, was able to prevent any more danger by using an extinguisher on the engine.

It's easy to forget sometimes just how much power our BMWs have and while they are some of the safest cars in the world, we are all still human, capable of suffering injuries and making driving mistakes (or simply suffering bad luck). So please be safe out there!

Because it's perfectly normal to travel at 186mph on public roads

Amazing how the entire wheel assembly came of.

I've seen that happen a few times at jobs like these.

I'm struggling to see from the pics what method of extrication was used?. If it was myself sizing up and formulating my Plan "A" and my Rapid / Plan "B" I'd be looking at a roof flap to cover both, its about the only method of entry with a vehicle in such a position. Nearside front door would be an option too.

An M3, M5 and M6. God damn. Although the M5 is now an M2.5.

Still, lucky to be alive after crashing at that moronic speed.

I don't see anything wrong with the speed in such a well placed car on an autobahn.

I see the issue with the moron who cut him up.

If other road users are retards then 70mph will still be dangerous.

testament to just how bleeding safe the car and of course the roadways are over in Germany,

i'd doubt that many cars would have occupants alive after a rtc at that sort of speed,
unboubtedly some of the energy would have been absorbed by the barrier at the initial impact lessening the crash to some degree.

and as for the other vehicle leaving the scene, just goes to shows there is ***** everywhere

Just as silly as the person merging to do those kinda speeds around other road users when anyone with any sense would know that the average driver isn't particularly smart.

I'm guessing they suffered life changing injuries even if they weren't fatal.

Did a runner from what exactly? They joined the motorway, not their fault that these moronic BMW drivers were driving at speed that is totally inappropriate.

Lack of care and attention, along with what was described as an aggressive manoeuvre?

Given the obvious BMW biased source, they're hardly likely to have described it as "BMW owner driving like a **** comes off worse when he passes slip road too fast and can't avoid sensibly merging vehicle" are they? :p

How on earth you 'aggressively' move from a slip road to the motorway anyway i'm not quite sure...
