Virgin Media hosted STEAM Content server

Link the sky one to the virgin forum. Branson will jump at any opportunity to out-do sky ;)

Or for a more productive result, email the CEO of Virgin Media, Nick Berkett.

We popped him an email when we were having issues with installation crews not turning up. We had a reply back from him personally in less than a few hours and a crew round that afternoon getting us sorted. :)

I suspect a few well written emails about the benefits of this for his savings and his customers to him could get the ball rolling very quickly.

I'm with VM 50meg, get top speeds all the time. Downloaded Portal 2 the other night in one go, no drops in speed and it's big download.

Most I get is 3MB, and thats with constant restarting of steam to achieve such speeds. Thats a far cry from the 12MB I can pull on usenet.

Throw me an email address and i'll get it done!

Unfortunately auditors don't often see it that way :(

I think you're underestimating them somewhat.

They'll have leagues of technical engineers and experts that know their stuff to advise on things like this. It's not one bloke hopeless sitting on a pile of cash shouting "Do what with my network!?" that would make a decision. :p

Citation needed! ;)

Well, over a year since the original post, a forum rep posted this towards the end of December:

Hi,

Unfortunately we've not anything else regarding this since the 'update' to tell you we hadn't heard anything It would, however, appear that the idea of a dedicated server is being entertained by multiple ISPs so I doubt it is far off to be honest.

I apologise I cant help any further at this time.

Kind Regards,

Patrick

That is not a no! :D We might get one yet, iv noticed steam speeds being pretty poor now days when compared with other alternatives such as origin. Steam used to always max my 50mb connection but now it rarely does half the speed it used to.

An update regarding this..

Sorry about the lack of news here, the short story is that we've repeatedly tried to get in contact with Valve about this but they've not replied to us. So we're not able to take this idea any further unfortunately.

Thanks

Followed by..

Yes, we've tried that several times but had no response and likewise had no response from several other attempts to contact them about this. And while ringing their offices was worth it to listen to their very entertaining answering machine message we didn't get any response from that either.

Thanks

So basically VM have attempted to push this forward but have been ignored by Steam.. which I find a little hard to believe. It's looking we will never get our own Steam content server.

Might be worth someone emailing Gabe directly. If he can sort out someone that's had a bit of a paypal kerfuffle in a matter of minutes, something that could be an actual benefit to the company should get a response as well. :)

Shame that Valve haven't responded...

As orderoftheflame said, they should contact Gabe personally as he has responded to a few people in the past :)

Why am I 100% sure they call them while it's night at Bellevue, Washington :p

Made me LOL.

If Virgin are telling porkies, this is going to blow up for them big time.

I will send an old fashioned letter to Gabe, always wanted a reason to send him a letter - lol.

For anyone interested, the email Virgin should have contacted is [email protected]
