Overpriced Holidays In The School Holidays

I don't know about anywhere else in the country , but Sunderland Council are having a campaign to keep the kids in school. BUT , how thick does Sunderland Council think we are?. Don't they know that in the school holidays the holiday prices nearly double? - A Thomas Cook holiday to Mallorca costs about 80% MORE in August compared with the same holiday in early September – £1,719 compared with £920. Centerparcs TREBLES it's price in the school holidays.

Why would any sane parent think this is a good offer from our Council?

Am i the only parent who takes the kids on holiday in term time? BTW mine are 7 & 8.

EDIT: I can only take my Summer holidays in the last week of July/1st week of August (Nissan Fortnight)

Demand and supply. And their absolutely correct. Children should not be taken out of school for a Holliday. Not only does it instill bad ideas to the kids. It's huge effort for teachers that wrecks everyone's education. Especially the amount if people who do it these days. Imagine how many kids are behind in the subject at any one time. Its not good.

Used to have the last week of the summer term off when I was younger. Did me no harm intellectually, although saying that I'm not a professor at Harvard so maybe it did.
 
I wouldn't dream of taking my children (whatever age) out of school purely for a holiday.

Someone I work with is taking her children out of school for a week before exams for a family holiday as it would cost too much in the summer and he is away on a school trip for a large proportion of the holidays. It's madness, that close to exams and taking him out of school, I hope he fails, not a nice thing to say I know.
 
They see a problem, and try their best to find a solution.

It is a good offer from the council, you can't go in September without breaking up your children's education. However at age 7 and 8 I don't really see how it could impact, primary school is babysitting more or less.

I don't agree with this up to a point, I missed quite a few weeks of primary and middle school to go on holiday's and saw different culture's and interesting sights that I simply wouldn't have seen if holidays were excluded to out of school time, It also made no impact on my education at all, some kids that couldn't afford to go on holiday during term time did far worse. I would exclude the later years of high school for this though (I didn't take term-time holidays then)

Additional parameters required: Whilst parents shouldn't be taking their kids out of school during term time to carte blanche say it is damaging for the kids is a little misleading. Yes during certain critical periods of schooling it's a real bad idea but missing a few days during less critical periods? Hardly the crime of the century then, is it?

Anyway if you are lucky enough to have a bright kid you could probably pull them out for weeks at a time now they don't segregate classes on abilities. :D
 
I'll take my Children out of school for a holiday, normally once every 2 years, but i would also make sure that it isn't an important time at school ( what i mean by that is that they will be able to catch up with work in their official holiday)

We've decided that during the last 2 years of high school is a time that we wont take any out.

If 2 weeks off a year stop you from learning how to read, write and do maths then you've got far more to worry about.

Lower school maybe but not primary school.
After year 5 you shouldn't really be taking kids out of school unless they're ill or something similar.

If you can't afford to go on holiday during school holiday either scale down your holiday or scale down your other expenses. If you still can't do then it would probably be better for your finances not to go on holiday at all.
 
I have no idea at all what lower school or year 5 are.

I'd sooner see primary school kids get a holiday than not get one at all. Even if it means missing a week or two of school.

Clearly when it's their highers etc then no it's not wise.

Durying any period, they have to catch up and won't understand the expanded topic or it requires extra teach effort. Which they can't afford in these huge class sizes and disobedient times.
