What convertible?

I wouldn't rule out a TF but as others have said they can be a tricky choice but there are good looked after cars out there that will already have gone through the main issue and been sorted! It might save you some money on the purchase price and provide a different sort of sporty drive. Best advice is to go look and try, as with any car!

I went through HGF once, nearly 4 years ago now! Recent problems have been minor but frustrating like the wiper linkage breaking. As with mx5 tree are specialists around! I wanted an s2000 but they would have cost to much at the time for an older or worn out car!

So after my first experience in a convertible car last week (albeit in sunny Cyprus), I stupidly think I want one! Obviously to take advantage of the 2 summer days us British folk get...

I have always wanted an MX5 after reading the reviews of it being a cheap and extremely fun car to drive. But my all time favourite convertible is the Honda S2000, and I am fully aware that it will probably be double the price of the Mazda to run and buy.

So if you had circa £4k what convertible would you buy? I'm not fussed if it's a 2 seater or if there are seats in the back. I will most likely have a 2nd car for practical use

You've clearly recognised that owning a convertible in the UK is lifetime away from driving one on holiday for a few days in Cyprus.

What was the one you drove though? We don't actually know what practical means for you - for some it is space for golf clubs, a large wallet and some inflatables - for others they might need some family space.

Height, I am 6'5"

Just can't get comfortable with my legs, and top up, it is a nightmare threading in and out.

Ah right, yeah that would be a bit of a squeeze. I was worried about that, but I manage to fit in fine (I'm around 6'1). My father tried one out and just couldn't get comfortable. Same height but big rugby playing shoulders and expense account belly ruled it out for him.

I've been messed around by the garage selling my car, so still waiting to make my MX5 purchase. Hopefully it'll be done soon though.

If this is your main or daily car that you rely on then a Mazda mx5. If it's a plaything then seriously consider either a MG-TF (way more character IMO and I stil really miss mine even though it was a POS) or a classic MG or other British roadster. Having a second car seriously expands your options with this sort of thing as it can be a little temperamental (has character) and you can jump in your other car for serious/boring journeys.

Iirc, you have a facelift mk2 focus ST right?
Do you plan on keeping it to run alongside the convertable or selling it off to pay for it?

Personally, if selling the focus, I would imagine, it would net easily 8k+ from when I last checked.

Maybe an awesome S2000 for about £6-7k and spend the change on a mondeo/fiesta etc as a daily car.

If you are keeping the ST then get the mx5 for sure

My wife has one and loves it, cracking little car to rev the nuts off and throw into bends. Oh and she is a hair dresser :p

I think the sports alloys look great. Obligatory pic :)

Would be selling the ST, but I think I have ruled out the S2000 idea, as it would be just as expensive (if not more) to run than my ST. However a sub £4k MX-5 would leave me with a tidy amount to put towards a house deposit, and from the outset they do look cheap to run. Must get over 30mpg from the 1.8 in such a light car, wheels look tiny so tyres will be cheaper...

I'm currently finding it hard to convince myself to sell the ST

Read: Worse ;)

No reason to pick either of those over an MX5 in this situation tbh. The TF just isn't as good, and you either want a classic car or you don't.

How much more are the newer better looking MX5's?

Also random off topic post... I seen a 12plate MF TF the other day.

I think that's definitely a personal view. For me the Mk1 and Mk2.5 ARE the better looking MX5's. I would probably have the Mk1 as well, but as a daily runner the Mk2.5 has less well known issues...
