I've spent thousands of pounds at OCUK over the years and I've got to be honest I've never encountered such a suffocating and puritanical forum atmosphere. Doubt I'll be buying my next rig from such a pedantic lot.
I would suggest that much like other mmo's, there are poeple who've devoted thousands of hours into the first game, and hope to do so in the second, so are very...particular about aspects of the game. TBH, this behaviour can be found in any community; there'll always be aspects in a game which can be changed for improvement, but aren't because a loud minority of the fanbase will implode in rage should you even touch the quirks in the system.
Catering for hard-core people means different things to different people. To me, that means that the explorable dungeon/elite events have a high execution barrier to complete and you need to be constantly alert even with trash mobs. To a hardcore raider, it means ample raids with enough gear to go for for a while and some interesting boss mechanics, whereas trash mobs are a negligible thing.
I think you would agree that to have a completely hardcore game would perhaps crash and burn when the development costs are most likely pretty damn high.
I think GW2 honestly has to hit a balance. People need some reason, PvE wise (WvW if executed well is self sustaining) to keep PvE-ing at a top tier level, in addition to difficulty; perhaps the side-grade system of gear they've hinted at or the cosmetic side of things will be enough to keep people going.
On the PvP side of things, honestly, for me, either the system must emphasize an EVE like system (i.e an interceptor is not necessarily worse than a Battleship, they fill different roles and do different things; as a player grows in skill points, versatility increases) or a system much like GW2's with normalised gear, level etc. I jumped ship completely to Dota2 from LoL once I got in, not just because of the gameplay differences, but also because it removed any trace of something you've done before the match giving you an advantage over someone of equal skill, but hasn't got that same advatange (e.g unlocking the masteries tree). I think people would graviate to pvp with a heavier emphasis on skill and opportunism rather than a gear-based affair, purely because there's more bragging rights to beating someone.
