Hi Guys,

Basically I'm studying a Btec Level 3 It qualification at my local college with a view to going on to university, all in all I have been doing quite well, getting good solid distinctions on all of my work completed thus far....

Now I wouldn't say I'm the perfect student, being a dad to two kids aged 3 and 1 and having a partner who is studying at university means that I have other commitments that take time away from my studies that cannot be avoided and all this is coupled with the fact I was transferred onto this course from a lower level so started off about 8 weeks behind everyone else.

My tutors have all been really supportive and understanding and essentially gave me free range to get my work done outside of deadlines etc as long as I didn't take the mick which I haven't however recently there have been some tutor changes and one in particular, a far less capable tutor than the one she replaced, has taken a major dislike to me...

This tutor is unprofessional towards myself and other students, unjustifiably condescending, abrupt and belligerent... Being a 28 year old man I wont stand for behavior such as being insulted in a class and have naturally come to logger heads....

Now I feel that I have followed all the procedures set forth by the college to resolve issues and my complaints, and that of other students, seems to be falling on deaf ears... nothing has been done!

This tutor has now taken too setting me unrealistic deadlines, due to my other commitments, stating I've agreed to them when I have not and has taken the liberty of contacting pastoral support etc who are now hounding me in regards to my situation with dead lines....

I've logged another complaint, the college was made fully aware of my circumstances and as such the above mentioned informal understanding was agreed, I asked for it in writing but it never came.

I feel like I am being victimised for speaking up and don't know what to do next!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Try talking to her about it directly rather than through official complaint lines first? explain your situation and how other tutors have tried to help. It's a place of learning, it sounds like your attitude is positive and you want to learn so they should be supportive.

With the personality clash, maybe best not to take it up with everyone but with her directly. Try not to be accusational but looking for a positive resolution that would benefit everyone.

student union rep ? first port of call i guess or head of dept and highlight that previously there were no problems ionly since the change of tutor back up from other students would be helpfull also if you can rely on them.

I have done everything you guys have suggested other than punch her in the face! Although it is getting tempting! Student union, as with all unions have been expelled from the college for some reason,

other students have also voiced concerns in relation to mine but it has been to no avail

I think she is interested in you ?

her overt irritability towards you is a sure sign that she wants you to bake her noodle ?

Takes me back to college myself. I was at sixth form but was studying computer science so it was done at the local college instead of at the sixth form. (This was back in the days when it really was computer science, ie learning a proper programming language, understanding the hardware such as ALUs etc)

We had two different tutors and at the end of year 1 we were advised that one was leaving. She was an expert in AI and was doing a load of work for the yanks on AI systems development. We started term 2 and after a few weeks we all held the same view of the replacement, useless, was a textbook teacher, limited/no real world experience and was a "just leanr what I tell you" type teacher not wanting to engage in what if etc
We basically protested all refused to attend until they found us a replacement. A week later our original tutor was back, she had managed to wrangle it so she could support us all for the second year. I doubt you would ever have had a class so utterly willing to work nicely for any tutor than we were for her. Looking back we were totally spoilt, she was a very very knowlegable expert in the real world who had done a little tutoring due to wanting to.

So I would get everyone one to agree and take it as a whole to student relations or whatever they call themselves now.

Deadlines are deadlines for a reason. Further education has them in order to get you to prioritise your workload and work under pressure. If you can't cope with them, then it's yourself to blame and not the tutors.

Many tutors/lectures don't know how to deal with "adults", they're too used to throwing their weight around with kids, had issues at both College and Uni as I was a mature student.

HEADRAT

I'd talk to the tutor and explain your circumstances. As far as her whole attitude thing goes, again i'd talk to her about it, if nothing changes then talk to her superior.

What utter tosh.

Why is it? What do you think happens if you start missing loads of deadlines in the real world?

yeh, i mean, a lot of people dont agree with their bosses and are given jobs they would prefer not to do and feel the timescale is unrealistic, but thats life.
if your learning experience gives you endless deadlines and tutors that just agree with everything you say, then you will not be fully prepared for the real working environment. obviously plain rudeness is not needed, but no one will please everyone, and different people react differently to the way tutors/bosses approach things.

Normally I would have no problem meeting deadlines, in fact had I been given deadlines with everyone else I would have met most if not all of them, however up until very recently I had no set deadlines, this tutor is now trying to set deadlines such as two days on assignments she knows I'm no where near completing as I have prioritised in the order I was given...

has she set you, an individual, these deadlines or the class as a whole?

His past tutors have been supportive about his circumstances and he says that he doesn't take the mick and gets the work done. Why should one tutor allow and another not? It's quite obvious that there is some sort of leeway when it comes to deadlines, or else he'd never of had the option in the first place.
