Car change from 135i M to... ?

Having just got a new job, my previous rough commuting mileage of 8000 has doubled just for the commuting alone, bringing my yearly predicted mileage to around 25kpa (inclusive of commuting, business and pleasure etc).

With the eye-watering price of petrol now, and the variable economy of the 135i (N55) I now need to chop it in for something more economical - and this means the dreaded 'Diesel' word.

I'd be looking to stay BMW but would consider any equivalents.

Problematically, the new range of 3-Series Saloon do not have 325D, 330D or 335D (yet?), so this limits these choices to second-hand vehicles or ageing dealership ex-demo stock.

Any specific recommendations? 3-series? 5-series?

Fun Alternatives? Golf TDI? Scirocco TDI? Passat TDI? etc

Thanks :)

P.S. if you're lucky, I might even spec Xenons this time

Call me crazy but are you not better off slightly changing your driving style?

Im sure you can get decent mpg out of a 135i if you try...

What do you get atm brim to brim?

It's a troll thread, he already knows what he wants. This is the same guy who once claimed buying new means you don't need to buy tyres.

Town/City driving bottoms out at around 23MPG.
Motorway 80MPH returns around 36MPG.
Motorway ~58MPH (tedious as hell) returns 39MPG.

I won't have time nor sanity to sit at 58MPH on a motorway...

Average tank at the moment is returning 24MPG.

One other requirement is decent space in back if I am taking colleagues too.

Did you seriously just list a Passat TDI as a 'fun alternative'?

Well done, you spotted my Easter-Egg! At least I know you read the post now.

I'm going to go a bit left field here... How about a cheap old diesel for commuting and keep the beemer for weekends and fun driving? Assuming you don't need to impress clients of course.

Don't bother with Golfs or A3's as they are about to be replaced.

You could check out the F20 1 Series - the 125d M Sport is quick and pretty efficient.

Enjoy the 135i.

When you take into account what you will lose in depreciation and then add the profit/warranty etc on its replacement you might as well stick with the 135. 25k miles pa isn't that many.

Unless there is an ulterior motive and you just fancy a chage of don't get on with the 135, stick with it I'd say.

The BMW 123d always seems to be well regarded as a fun but frugal car. However, I would take some time to go over the costs of changing car to make sure it is worthwhile first.

Assuming the jump will be more towards motorway mpg rather than city mpg you can probably assume you'll gain ~10mpg going from the 135 to the 2.0l TDI from VAG. While the servicing will be cheaper (and possibly tyres) I'd expect you to be underwater on the deal for a really long time, less if you don't use super I guess.

If you can afford a new 135 I think it's probably fair to say that you can afford the fuel though, it's not like it's a cheap car.

Stealth edit: 123d doesn't do all that high MPG IIRC, low/mid 40s which isn't a huge change from what the n55 will do.
