Guild Wars 2

Yeah, I understand it was beaten to death previously but I've only got around to really posting again so I'd like to air what I have to say :p

My point was that you haven't been the first person to raise it - it seems to be a pretty common issue. Not that it is a dead horse, so to speak. I think that video you linked actually shows a pretty good example of it with an ice pbaoe that almost one shots you.

It was in reply to melee issues?

Yep

Great so:
1) Melee does more damage. Melee damage is simply higher than ranged damage across the board.

Like I said, and? What is his point here? That as melee is inherently higher damage they shouldn't have free reign over all mobs? I can dig that, but currently it's too much restriction and why did they even make it like so in the first place?

I think the point of this was more a case of - melee have higher base damage, but are offset by having to evade, move or stun more often because of the survivability implications.

2) Melee has more control. With a few intentional exception Melee has a lot more control than ranged.

Edit This is coming from a warriors point of view
I in my limited knowledge of the game would beg to differ, control is a very selective word and with a mob that virtually stands still, there is NO control to be had. You can attack, you can leap (towards a targeted mob), slow, power attack and aoe swirl with sword/axe. I'd go into most weapon types but I assure you there's no "control" to be had in what any MMO veteran would know to be in the sense of the word.

Also from a warriors POV, the only melee sets I really felt had any control were that of 1h mace / shield + 1h mace / 1h mace.

Stun on adrenaline attack, weakness on auto attack, block/knockdown as skill 2, daze (interupt) as skill 3. Offhand mace has a cone aoe knockdown and shield has a stun and a blocking stance.

Aside from the melee issues - an idea that is starting to circulate is of using two weapon sets, with the same weapons. Giving a second set of the same skill cool downs.

From early impressions, is the game going to be good, or a bit ordinary?

I think it's going to be pretty big. It feels a lot more complete even in beta than a lot of supposedly ready-for-release mmos.

Provided they listen to feedback and act on it they have a potentially huge hit on their hands.

The other deciding factor is whether they keep the cash shop under control or let themselves get greedy. They've said it'll just be cosmetics and stuff, but we'll see.

I think it's honestly too early to say whether it'll be a hit or a dud. One thing that is a given is that obviously this game will cater to the old-guard of GW1 players that are satisfied with a game that builds anything onto the original formula and extant game - so it will still have a decent following, no matter what. But it is clear that the GW2 developers and hype-machine are aiming for much, much more than their original market. Will the game properly capture a wider chunk of the MMO market? (nominally made up of frustrated and bored ex-WoW players). I'm not so sure. We really haven't seen enough from the Beta - and what we have seen, certain things do need to be changed before this wider and more varied group are going to be satisfied.

The post-release quarter is the real crucible for new MMO's. Lord knows we've seen enough major-hype MMO's come out to immense fanfare, huge initial sales and subscriber take-ups... and then be deserted ghost-towns 3 months later. GW2 will keep its original fanbase, but whether it retains the larger chunk they are aiming for... it's too early to say.

Any one care to list a few of the stand out features that set this apart from all the other mmog's out there?

I never played the first Guild Wars but sounds like it was pretty good, although I, like many others I suspect, are getting a bit tired of the recycling of the same old features and grinds.

well there is a large GW1 player base. infact. GW1 has come closest to WOW in the MMO market

Umm not sure on that really. WoW is huge and will continue to be so. GW1 is dead purly down to lack of content. I loved GW1 and can see GW2 is set to improve on every bad point about GW1. They are putting so much effort in to make this one hell of a game.

Personally from what I have seen, any MMORPG fan should be at least trying GW2.

True, though as GW2 is releasing with no subscription fee, it isn't going to be easy to make direct comparisons because it isn't a case of retaining a subscriber base.

The longevity of PVE is concerning to me, especially as they do not have to keep subscribers, so we really have no idea how frequent new content will be added. Ultimately, grinding the same instances for vanity gear is not any more attractive to me that the whole gear treadmill, though obviously this game does not need to be the be all end all, a glut of content would be nice.

Surely by creating new content and making them an expansion like GW1 they will make people come back and play them?

Hopefully!

It wouldn't be overly surprising if they follow the same year on year expansion model as the previous guild wars. I wonder if because of the cash for gold system they have in place, they will also have content patches, or will the cash shop income be to recoup operating costs.

Melee sucks because of untelegraphed one shot aoe in PVE due to scaling and particle effect insanity.

I can see why a video of a PVP build used against target dummies is relevant though.

the price is still putting me off.

im going to wait until after launch and hope it goes down in price a bit.

some people might claim but its an mmo so its a bargain as theres no monthly fee but to me £50 for something i might not like is just asking to much

Regarding melee:

You constantly evade and miss the point - purposefully, methinks.

Nobody is saying melee is weak in PvP. Likewise nobody was saying that melee is weak in the cinematic-mode boss encounter you kept linking (and getting flamed for on the GW2 Forums).

People say melee is weak in standard PvE. Mob scaling. Particle effects. Cluster-rapes.

Repeat:

Nobody is saying melee is underpowered in PvP.
Nobody is saying melee was inept in the special, staged boss encounters.

It's a more general weakness that means it always makes more sense to keep range in ordinary (group) PvE.

They've stated they have enough content planned for the next five years. Make of that what you will but Tim Kring said the same thing about Heroes, and we know how that ended :p

Developers are full of this type of hype-talk. You have to remember that, being subscription-free, GW2 is clearly aiming for maximum unit-shift at launch. As soon as they get the initial £50 from you to recoup their development costs and make the next five year's profit, they're going to care a lot less about continued satisfaction. So of course they're promising 5 years of heavy updates now - haven't we heard it all before? Take it with a pinch of salt. This is nothing new - even if the game will be.

Whine less, I havnt even said anything about melee on the official forums, which if you are using as your basis of information seem to be purely full of noobs.

I use these forums:

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic...-i-dont-get-it/page__hl__melee__fromsearch__1

Where people actually know more about the game then random newcomers signing up to the official forums and whining that melee is too hard.

Bhavv I saw you post on the official GW2 forums in response to a melee whine thread, you linked your video to the swamp monster and about 4 people immediately flamed and /wtf'd you for it. Bit silly to lie about it, you even linked it earlier in this thread!

Anyway my point is that you are evidently ignoring the well-formulated and eloquently expressed concerns of 5+ people now. Please take more care to read, or else the discussion just goes backwards to recap on what has already been said unnecessarily. At the moment linking your youtube videos of the swamp-monster bossfight or some competitive PvP footage isn't really relevant to the PvE concerns.
