A 94-year-old grandmother, beaten up in her bed as she slept

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/grandmother-viciously-beaten-her-own-bed-120633888.html

not a million miles away from where i live

i will never understand why or how someone could even think of doing this, let alone actually do it.

be interesting to see what sentence the offender will be given if/when caught, i'm guessing 6 yrs due to a defence of being high on drugs and a deprived childhood.

Its truly sickening. I'd say the death sentence but that would probably spark a massive argument in here, so i'll just say a life sentence

Poor lady. This should be seen as being as bad as child abuse imo as at that age she is completely unable to defend herself. She will spend the rest of her years terrified of being left on her own :(.

It's not often it happens, but I really do feel sick to the stomach. That's desperately sad. I can't understand how depraved someone could be that they would consider that in any way a possible action to take. I hope they're caught, but I can't fathom how rehabilitation could be possible.

I did pick up on the horrendous journalism, she wasn't beaten as she slept, she'd have woken up. Poor English such as that sticks out.

that's the worst thing about all of this. she has lived to a ripe old age and will now spend the rest of her (now even shorter life, this will probably finish her off) not with the fond memories of her life but of this completely evil act instead. her grandchildren and children will remember her as a shell of a lady because of this. truely a nightmare scenario.

Something else has just clicked too.... It can't be the case that the beating was necessary, it's not as if they'd be burgling the house and had to fight off the old lady, for some reason they wanted to hurt her, it wasn't even to facilitate the robbery.

it'll be one of two things; off their face on drugs or doing it to show how bad ass they are. the defence will play the drugs card ''he didn't know what he was doing'' etc

Do you really think beating up a 94 year old woman would earn kudos with anyone? I would imagine even most criminals would find that abhorrent.

I think that whoever did this deserves to be tortured to death, or just being dumped into the middle of the pacific ocean.

A life in prison, I.E. 5 years in jail then released for good behaviour is not enough. A crime like this does not deserve any kind of possible 'rehabilitation' or concern over the criminals human rights.

I await comments from the liberal pansies who believe that the person that did this can simply be rehabilitated.

Some can, it's not as black and white as you think it is.
Many of the re-offending rates in other countries are much lower due to different approaches to rehabilitation.
Most people think that a long sentence is more likely to stop someone re-offending but this in fact false, it's more like a resonance graph where there is a band of optimum time to release someone.
If you leave it too long, they become a slave to a prison and won't know how to live on the outside, if it's too short then they won't change as a person.
Really you have two choices
1) Keep them in Prison for a long time, where they are more likely to commit a crime if released
2) Have a sensible science led policy that decides the best time to release where they are least likely to recommit.
3) State sanctioned murder.
