i know we have a windows8 consumer thread, but wanted to find out what people think in regards to upgrading?

for me...

when on vista i was dying to get windows7 it was pretty much the same in looks and design just a million times better, it could also be used in the work place and home.

now windows8 seems to change everything from what is arguably MS's best OS. I understand the change and keeping up with what google and apple are doing is important as well as staying relevant, but i cant really see how windows8 fits in the work place (in its current state) and i don't know what a lot of senior windows users are going to think of it?

Furthermore i can see when you buy a laptop each and every tile is gonna be filled with chudware, links to toolbars, norton 60 day trials and ebay shortcuts. I understand people like you and I will remove or even format from the off, but 90% of users wont know what the hell they are doing.

I for one will use it to stay 'afresh' but jeeeeese why break a winning formula and at least give the user or the company/school the option to have it as it is in windows7

Im happy enough with Windows 7 for the time being. I think Windows 8 is superb but more suited to tablets imo. I will probably make the change eventually mind.

I will get windows8, if I stick to it is another thing entirely.

XP to vista was a dual boot scenario.

Vista to windows 7 was a straight replacement.

7 to 8 will be a dual boot again. I look forward to superior integration with windows phones etc, but the tiles I have no interest in. I find my current setup of windows 7 is fine.

thats my issue, i love how fast it boots and how snappy it is, but there main feature and what they are basing it around is the only bit i don't want!

i don't want big tiles that point me to my porn folder! i like my desktop!

8 is my unlucky number (serious). Then again, if Windows 7 was really v6.1, then Windows 8 won't be v8 will it?

As for the interface, will probably be pointless without a touch monitor. I believe that touch monitors are still priced outside of consumer range.

Sticking with Win 7 for my desktop and Win XP for my laptop.

I guess you could say I already have :) I'm not convinced about metro, at all, but just about everything else is slicker and quicker than windows 7. for that alone I've already ditched windows 7 on my pc :)

James Miller, how do you find W8's support for older applications?

I know that Windows 95, 98, ME were regarded as DOS-based, and NT4, 2000, XP were regarded as NT-based. Will Windows 8 join the same group as Vista and 7? Are they still NT or are they Unix-based? Can't remember now.

Testing the OS i hate it to bits.. windows 7 for me.. the menu is hard to navigate.. they sould have just improved windows 7

This isnt going to be a "I tried metro but it was riddled with bugs, therefore the main release which lacks driver support etc will be terrible and worthless so I will not even try it!" type of OS like vista is it . . . . .

Had a whirl with it and tbh hated it - for most of my uses the metro UI, etc. isn't needed and the rest seemed a step backwards in user friendliness. Windows 7 for me is pretty much good and I see no need to move on from it.

I still hate the Metro UI, even though I have Windows 8 installed on both my main desktop and the laptop. Can't get used to it on my desktop at all, haven't used it for weeks now since Metro UI always feels like bloatware.

Windows 8 is very snappy on my Acer Ferrari One which is the main reason I installed it.

Sticking to Windows 7, I can't stand the look of the Metro interface at all I like my desktop and start menu too much :p could Microsoft have rolled out changes to Task Manager in Windows 8 to Windows 7 via a service pack or something?

interesting responses from most so far, kinda same as me, we want the new OS, we like the boot times and the slickness but not so keen on the whole tiles thing,

If they do a decent pre-order price the same as the done with Windows 7 then yes I will get it, and use as a dual boot.

I am happy with Win7 but do like the way Win8 works and looks.

I still can't get on with it outside of a touch based interface.

I just wish they'd have kept the option to choose a "classic" install over a "metro" one. It certainly won't work in the workplace (and Microsoft have pretty much confirmed that Windows 8 is not really destined for the enterprise space, regardless of their being an SKU for it).

Touch based desktops are nasty, I mean who wants their screen to wobble every time they need to make an input or gesture?

I'll likely own Windows 8, but it won't go anywhere near my gaming rig, and will likely be on a tablet or touch-based laptop.

I'll still probably have ViStart installed on it either way.
