Looking at an Audi TT, am I mad?

Haldex is just an additional 20k service.

Rear suspension bushes are a common replacement on the mk4 anyway. So you're in no worse position.

the tt rear suspension, it is very differnet to common golf suspension (unless it is a 4mo)

the haldex bits, i think the oil is very dear, and i think you need a special tool too

The TT is a lovely shape and feels nice to be inside tbh. Would happily have one myself.

Not sure why they get the "womans car" tag, the convertible maybe but not the coupe.

I've had two, first a 225 and now a quattro Sport so I'm obviously a big fan. I think if you're into the looks then that's much of the appeal. The interior design is still one of my favourites and yes you can get essentially the same mechanicals in a Leon/Golf/whatever but that's not really the point.

They get a bit slated for their driving dynamics and ultimately they aren't as good as a 350Z/RX-8/330ci but they are small and pointy, they grip well and point to point they aren't slow. The haldex four wheel drive is only ever a help, never a hinderance and means you're never short of traction. They will understeer when pushed and it'll never power oversteer which is really the fun killer but I still love mine.

Cheap to run, 40mpg+ on a run, tyres are reasonable on regular sized 18" wheels (225/40/18) and no more expensive to service than a golf. Haldex service isn't expensive and is only due every 20k. Just get one that's been looked after and you'll be fine. N75 valves are a common failure and as mentioned early dashpods and radios fail so watch out for those.

Thanks for all your comments so far! Good feedback on the tt idea. Believe me I would be buying an s2000 but the sensible other half still wants the practicality. Also for some reason my insurance is stupid (over £1000) on an s2000, but on the 225 tt its around £500.

Would the 51 plate models be the first to have the S line stuff as standard?

The S-Line was initially a special edition model in its own right. They are quite rare. Honestly the whole S-Line thing is pretty meaningless anyway.

S Line pack became standard February 2002. As far as I'm aware it's just the lower suspension and 18" 9 spoke wheels.

I'm not sure at what point the facelifted grill and lights came in.

True, I read somewhere some of the optionals became standard. Some of them have the red leather interior, which I find ghastly

Lower suspension make much of a difference to ride quality?

because of the looks, i feel its a style over substance thing.

4wd, esp and tc to make sure its safe to drive by those compeltely inept of talent, its hardly a drivers car, so i dont see it as a car that would appeal to men.

gf would love one though, id happily drive it, it would be our commuter car

It's a 40k service interval on the Golf Mk4. Also I just had the Haldex oil changed and it was <£36 inc VAT - hardly bank-breaking :p

I don't know, my 225 was a 1999 with 17" wheels and normal suspension and my current quattro Sport has different suspension and ARBs to the newer 225s so not really comparable but my qS rides much better than my old one ever did.

From memory...

SLine was 2002 with SLine badges, limited combination of colours and limited number of cars. 20mm lower suspension and 18" RS4 wheels

Early 2003 the 20mm drop and 18" RS4 alloys introduced across the range.

Late 2003 a new grille was introduced.

I think 2002 cars still suffered. It's not hugely expensive to fix though, last time I checked there were services offered on eBay that would repair it for £250ish.

thats not so bad I suppose. One of the checks I'll do is to see whether the fuel gauge matches the range, might even be extra sad and take a thermometer to check the temp gauge is working too.

This will be my first proper car purchase, and to say I'm excited is an understatement. :)

You can switch the climate control into diagnostic mode by pressing a couple of buttons which allows you to get digital readouts from the sensors including temp so it's not necessary to take a thermometer. There are guides on YouTube how to do it.

It's very obvious if it's broken though as you'll just be sat in traffic and the temp gauge will suddenly hit 130. Not at all scary the first time that happens...

Also make sure the volume control works on the stereo, early ones have a finite life which is very annoying.

ours has cost quite a bit over the 2.5years we have had it but now seems very well sorted, the build is superb with the interior showing nothing like the miles it has done

on the downside fuel consumption is poor in town and the handling not good at all

See you along the M27 sometime then :D

In september you will probably see someone with a blue TT, scruffy hair and glasses, with a massive grin on his face (or a frown if I get stuck in the fareham queue)

What sort of work did you have done on yours and what sort of mileage is it?
