Hi,

I want to upgrade my CPU from Intel Celeron 450 @ 2.20GHz
to Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550.

Does this processor support the motherboard and is there a faster CPU so I put in the motherboard?

Yes, that system should accept an upgrade to a Q9550 Core 2 Quad. Just make sure your BIOS version is up-to-date.

Also, the Celeron 450 is only a 35W single core CPU - so when you upgrade it to a 95W Quad core you may want to install a new LGA775 compatible CPU cooler.

Thanks, I found this Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 would this fit the motherborad.

Is there any more faster CPU than this?

The CPU below is the fastest Core 2 Quad available.

Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor QX9770
(12M Cache, 3.20 GHz, 1600 MHz FSB)

Whether its compatible with your mobo, i dont know  It is Socket 775 so I would hope so :)

The extreme edition CPUs are marginally faster than the Q9550 - but the increase in performance is basically linear with clockspeed (Q9550 vs Q9650 = 2.83GHz vs 3.0GHz) - so not much. Apart from the clockspeed - these CPUs are the same. Plus the Extreme edition CPUs tend to cost a lot more.

Considering the age of these CPUs and your motherboards inability to overclock I wouldn't spend too much on a CPU upgrade. It seems that the Q9550 chips regularly sell for ~£85. Which is quite a lot for a 4 year old CPU.

Personally I would consider going for a Q6600 (~£50) and put the money you saved towards a new PC.

The Q9550 are still going for minimum of £100+ on the famous auction. I got £155 for mine in March 2012 :D

The Q6600 are going for a minimum of £40.

So as cmndr_andi says, go Q6600. :)

Thanks for your reply's, I think I'm going to go for Q9550 as I don't think I will upgrade in the future anyway.:)

How much room do you have available in the case?

If it will fit, this is a good value cooler which uses a standard push-pin type mount (I would usually pick the Xigmatek Loki, but I'm not sure a backplate type cooler will work with your board).

You could also look for a second-hand stock Intel LGA775 Quad core CPU cooler. This should be pretty cheap and easy to fit - however an aftermarket cooler like the small tower coolers above will be quieter and cooler (and you could use them on future systems).

The current CPU fan has got four screws so it might be Xigmatek Loki.

I just brought a QX9650 Quad Core 2 Extreme for £140 :D is that a good price and what cooler is good for this CPU.

Thanks

As you currently have only 2gb ram installed, an extra 2 gig would likely make a lot of difference to the sytem responsivness.
2x 1gb DDR2 shouldn't be too expensive at the coastal inlet. Its usually the bigger capacity 2gb sticks that are in higher demand.

Do you mean DDR3?

I found some RAM "4GB kit (2GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 memory module" for £22.79

If you search the quoted in Google you will find where I'm getting them from ;-)

Is there any place you could suggest?

Not a good price and you can't overclock so it was pointless getting a extreme version anyway. Personally i don't think it's worth spending that sort of money on a old system. Now you are looking at ram as well you should have just got a new cpu/board and ram to bring your rig up to date. Last week you could have got a brand new retail 2500k for only £6 more than you paid for that QX9650.

Thanks for your reply, I will just keep the CPU and I'll forget about buying RAM. I won't spend any more money on this system.

And how do I know which new board fits inside this Dell 560 case.

Should I get ASUS Silent Square EVO Air Cooler Fan?
