Anyone got any info on this?

Who's going to give it a try?;)

I believe the PCB is the same.

The memory is the same size and clocked the same.

Could the 670 GPU work as a 680 with the correct BIOS?

Judging by the below post stolen from another thread on here the GB Windforce 670 is just a 680 with a different BIOS and maybe a knobbled GPU. But who knows? Maybe the first 670 boards use 680 GPU's as well?

The only difference is less cores. If they have lasered them off then you wont be able to do it but if they just turned them off in the same manner they did with the 6950 early variants, then welcome to a 680 :D

That'd kill the idea then. :( Not arguing but where did you get that info? I'd like to read up.

Cheers

erm... that t'internet?
I can't remember exactly I will have to do some searching

what might be an idea is if there is a dual bios card out at some point so that someone can try it and be able to recover if it borks it

Well Nvidia has a habit of fusing parts off, we're just assuming they've done the same to this card.

Which is a high probability, still... someone should try it just for the lulz... :D

I wouldn't attempt this, Nvidia completely laser off the extra SMX units on these cards, they always have done.

The PCB doesn't affect this anyway, the differences are all on the GPU.

googling 670 and fused off I can find references to nvidia having said it is fused off but I can't find a direct quote

one thing you might be able to do though is flash a custom bios that allows you to increase the power target higher than 122%

Oh well back to the drawing board!:(

Good point about the power target tho. Sure someone will do this at some point!

Better get back to my Haribo!:D

It would be an epic failure on Nvidia's part if it was a case of flashing to a GTX 680 bios...bit like it was for AMD, as the community will always try it and unlock it, thus loosing them lots of money.

I've read on a few articles its laser cut as well.

AMD knew what they were doing with the 6950, they only stopped due to unhappy AIB's having poor 6970 sales, it was re-introduced at a later date with the toxics and some Sapphire dual fan editions, all imo of course.

Sales went through the roof when word got out(gibbo even said the 6950 was OcUK's best selling card last gen), fly move by AMD indeed.

Never said they needed a bios flash to sell, just my tupence worth on the 6950's being let out the door with a handy dual bios switch introduced on the pcb!

The 670 certainly will be flying off the shelves, nearly 680 performance, best positioned card by far!

Exactly, could be the reason to make you buy one instead of keeping what you have in your system, much like what happened with my purchasing logic with the 6950's.

Well there were certain 465's that were flashable to full 470s a couple of years ago so nvidia dont always laser them off.

If i had one, i'd give it a try. As long as you back up the original bios you can reflash the card, even if it appears bricked and you cant get any display.

nVidia do usually laser them off - the 465s were mostly 470s that some AIBs software strapped due to demand rather than how they came from nVidia.

Not saying its impossible but nVidia have had a hardon for laser cutting core functionality on cards after the 6x00 series onwards so I'd be quite suprised if the 670 was unlockable.

So are they butchering perfectly good GPUs or indentifing the specific faulty SMX unit within problem GPUs and fusing them?

Either sounds like a waste of money or very labour intensive.
