What is the problem with a bit of temp, its got a Junction temp of 105degC, if you are at 90 its not so bad.

Don't you need a much higher clocking SB to match IB?
 
Fancy lower temperatures myself mate thats all. I don't need pciex 3 so I'm not really losing anything apart from 20 degrees or so!
 
I applaud you for taking the plunge and sending it back -Mike-, maybe if more followed what you have done Intel will get the message this time and actually fix the issue, come on guys get sending IB back while you can:)

Intel won't change the design to appease a tiny minority of Ivy Bridge users. At stock operating frequencies the chips are cooler and show modest performance gains, as well as offering PCIe 3, enhanced iGPU and LucidVirtu.

TBH I think the whole argument is ridiculous. The difference in performance between a 4.5GHz IB and 4.9GHz SB in real-world scenarios is negligible. I don't get the obsession with raw GHz.

Well if people start to return there CPU's I am pretty sure they will notice as you say we are a tiny minority none the less if this tiny minority send them back they will notice.
LucidVirtu is pointless for most people who have a GPU all ready, pcie-3 is also as useless as virtu

So why exactly would you go IB if that is your thinking?
 
Should mean a huge difference. When I took the heatsink off the TIM I originally put on was spread way too thin. currently though my idle max temp for core 2 and 3 has dropped by about 5C core 4 is quite cool and core 1 is being it's usual self and sitting on about 25-27 degrees.

I'm more than happy with my 3770k @ 4.6 - if I was lucky and got a 2700k to 5.0 gig - it may be slightly faster and cooler - but the temps are irrelevant if stable (its not like Ivy is pumping out lots of heat into the case) and if the 5.0gig 2700k was faster its going to be insignificant - perhaps less than 10%

add to that more consistent DRAM overclocking performance from the Ivy's IMCs - then it seems an odd decision to return

^^ to be fair - I'd prefer to see my overclock in the 5's but in reality no difference

to be real honest - not sure other than video encoding I'd notice a difference at my current 4.6 vs stock ! lol - certainly in games anyway
 
A real reason to send hot IB back is because if Intel release a fixed version, lots of people are going to want to get rid of hot IB and I can't see anyone buying them, where as if you had a SB to sell on to offset the cost of a cool IB it would be much easier to sell on.

Suppose that's true. I really need to figure out what Im actually covered for by Intel's OC'ing insurance.

chances of them releasing a new stepping are very very remote I'd say

especially with Haswell out in 14 months or so
