Rats in cavity walls

hi all,

So, I was in the garden last night (around dusk) and spotted a rat next to the house, as soon as I'd seen it, it disappeared down a hole it's dug in-between my house and the outside waste water drain. (you know, the one that the sink and washing machine pumps into).

Anyway's, I really don't want rats in my garden (like everyone else) so I grabbed a spoon and filled the hole in packing it in tight and stuffing hardcore in it thinking that I'll kill it in it's nest.

This has turned out to be a bad idea, as about an hour or so later, I'm sat in the sitting room watching TV with the Mrs when we hear scratching noises in the cavity wall behind the TV!!

Needless to say, I'm having issues sleeping as I can't images of rats out of my mind!!

I've got the council in tomorrow to lay some bait down, but I'm worried I'm going to end up with a dead rat(s) in my wall stinking the place up!

Has anyone been in this situation before?

Any advice on what to do would be awesome..

Thanks in advance!

unplug the hole you covered up. once the bait has been laid hope that the rat crawls out to die. Unless of course the bait is the stuff that neutralises any odours when it kills the rat then it shouldn't matter where it dies, it hopefully wont smell.

as above, if it dies in your cavity wall and starts to rot, it will absolutley stink, my parents had just 1 mouse die underneath the floor and it stunk to the point we had to take all the boards up to get it

We had no option other than to put poison down to kill the one in our flat. As much as I hate killing animals, we had no choice because it was causing havoc!

Eventually it died under the floor and stank the place out. The whole floor had to be taken up to find the poor thing :(

Hahaha, you blocked a rat in your house, classic. I think the best you could do is unblock the entrance and buy a rat trap from B&Q or something, wouldn't go with any poison because it could climb back in and die.

Either you could do it or leave it to the council, but don't think you can trust them to do a good job these days.

Thanks for the responses so far guys.

Yes, thank you for pointing out my inability to foresee anything further down the road then 10 minutes. :(

However, I will admit that to an outsider, it must look pretty funny....

cant recomend it enough,

get a cat matey, and dont leave any food debris around, those rats will quikly move on.

if it aint comfy, they wont stay

simples

Create a virus that kills all rodents

Wiping out over a thousand species would make you epic
Until the virus mutates and they start coming back to life as a new breed of unstoppable zombie rats that wipe out all humanity. I don't think you really thought this one through did you?

My cat keeps bringing little mice in all the time, almost always alive, and lets them loose around the house. They don't last long though, usually find them dead the next morning, usually in one piece.

I had a similar problem a few years ago, I lived in a house share and my room was on the ground floor, I kept getting awoken at night with this horrible scratching sound under the floor! i knew it was rats so bought some poison from B&Q and lifted up the carpet and a few floor boards and laid the bait. I would check back and low and behold the rats had eaten the poison, the about a week later I noticed I hadn't herd from the rats. Great I thought, but then a few weeks later a smell appeared and it was like death, the smell stunk the lounge out so we kept windows open, the about a few months later the smell had gone.

It was worth it in the end as i was sleeping with a knife in my room encase one got into my bed room! Luckily they didn't.
