How long til Red Bull go out of business?

Woolworths used to be one of the UK's top retailers, HMV were the top dogs for selling CDs.

Yea but people stopped buying CDs

People have no reason to stop buying energy drinks

Coca cola would be a better comparison , similar product wih similar sales routes etc

Edit - Also the fact that the drink is only a small percentage of Red Bull's income that even if somehow it did get muscled out by some cheap imitation, Red Bull would not just immediately declare bankruptcy and cease trading.

As I understand it Red Bull make all their money from selling the drink. The activities they are involved in (F1, extreme sports etc) are just branding exercises to help them sell their drink.

..at the mere cost of 35p a can. IMO, it tastes exactly the same as Red Bull so why would anyone pay £1.20 and up for the 'original'? Surely they'll go out of business in a few years.

Unlikely, they're aiming at completely different markets and price points. I don't know precisely which energy drink you were linking to but it's irrelevant for the purposes of the argument. Red Bull are a premium brand and as such will charge a premium price, they're not aiming to compete with the own brand energy drinks so until and unless they become a direct competitor they're unlikely to expend much effort trying to crush the "bargain basement" versions.

Whether the drink is worth the premium is a matter of opinion of course but for the market segment Red Bull is targeting making the price much cheaper might well reduce sales because it would then no longer be viewed as a premium product and would instead be just one of a number of energy drinks rather than a brand and "lifestyle choice".

woolworths died due to lack of direction

HMV died because of the internet and downloadable music

so Unless a company comes up with some kind of formulation that you can take faster than a can of bully, or offer something better than a can of bully, then I can't see Red Bulls branded energy drink going away anytime soon

Its not like powerade / gatorade / cheap supermarket version 'ade' made lucozade go bust is it ?

For the records the cheaper version do not have the same taste and or colouring as the originally can of bully. There are differences that you can pick out a mile away if you are an avid red bull drinker.

Red Bull has no competition.

In the sense that, Monster, Relentless, Red Rooster, Blue Chicken etc, are all awful in comparison.

I don't like how small Red Bull cans are, I want 1 liter cans.

You can get larger cans, but Monster is still better.

I drank two oversized cans driving back from dirty Ipswich once, and they didn't touch me. They did nothing.

Has anyone ever ordered a "Happy Shopper and Vodka" in a bar?

I doubt it (its Euroshopper btw :P) but unless you actually see them put Red Bull in do not assume that you are actually getting Red Bull.

Anyway, the cheapy is only officially sold in 11 European countries, Red Bull is a global brand, so despite outselling Red Bull by ... three to one was the last numbers I heard, I do know ES sales are up year on year so maybe a little more now, in terms of units sold, those units still earn less than the Red Bull in the markets concerned.
Apparently the main consumer of the ES is not the same as the main consumer of RB and the ES sales are mostly new sales to people who wouldnt otherwise have bought an energy drink at all because of the price point.
