I'm doing a survey to see how many people can identify real members of the Police from private security who wear similar uniforms.

I'll collect data for a couple of weeks and then post the answers along with some statistics.

Remember to read the question at the top. PCSOs count as Police :)

Feel free to complete it here: http://burnsy2023.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/police-or-not-police.html

Isn't it a criminal offence to impersonate a police officer?

Other than a couple of times I've never had dealings with the police, and I've never, ever, had dealings with private security. However I don't like the idea of private security, and I'm a big enough asshat that I'd probably have a real go at any that tried to assert any kind of authority. Do they have any special legal status under any circumstances (in Scotland or in England/Wales)?

Edit : I wouldn't mind knowing how I did... do you intend to give scores out for those of us who left our names?

It doesn't tell you how many you got right?

No it doesn't. I'll post the answers in a couple of weeks as I stated in the OP ;)

Yes it is a criminal offence, but it's subjective to what constitutes Police uniform, which is kind of the point of this pseudo-research.

I don't see why it's subjective. There's no point - at all - of dressing in a similar way to a police officer other than impersonating one.

By similar way I don't mean useful stuff like hi-vis or bulletproof stuff. I mean the chequered style stuff or ranks etc.

You did miss a question - Do they have any special legal status under any circumstances (in Scotland or in England/Wales)?

No more than a normal member of the public which basically extends to citizens arrest for certain crimes.

I agree with you, but that's what the courts have said.

Sometimes. Look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_Safety_Accreditation_Scheme
