I want to buy some stuff to do basic weight training at home

Probably looking at a few £00, basics you would need are a power rack, bench, olympic barbell and olympic weights up to at least £150kg.

When I built a little home gym it cost me about £500 for all those ^.

With that you can squat/deadlift/bench/pull up/dips/squat/squat/squat and more squats. Which is all you really need to be doing, at least when you are starting.

This is off course assuming you are not talking about just buying a few weights from Argos, which would be totally pointless :)

You'd probably be better off just going to the gym. A massive range, and the fee isn't really that much.

Coupled with the motivation of being out and training around others.

Even now when I try training at home(abs for example, which don't require much equipment) I just lose the motivation very quickly and end up leaving it.

People pay in excess of £30 a month on gym membership. All you need is a small section of weights and you can improvise the rest. That's paid off within 2 months of gym membership, so, yes it really is that much.

Just buy a quality bench, you can get second hand deals on ebay and gumtree if they are in your area. Even if you just get a quality bench with no waits then buy some dumbbells and you can do some weights. If you have more money available then buy a bench bar and weights.

But I would be careful about buying a cheap bench because i read reviews on some of them and they are usually not worth it. One of those things where you are better off spending a fair amount because the low end range are a waste of money.

Thinks to watch out for, small benches (if you are 6foot you need a long bench), benches that are not stable, benches that are low quality.

I have some dumbbells but they are currently being used as a door stop :(

Rubbish. Buy 100kg of weight + barbell bar + dumbell bars for about £100-150. Then buy a bench with rack off ebay for £20-50. You'll have everything you need right there to last you two years if you decide to start taking your lifting seriously, longer if you're just interested in generally 'keeping fit'. Might also want to consider one of those 'attach to your door frame' pull-up bars, if you have nowhere else to do pullups on (I use the edge of my garage roof).

100kg isnt very much though is it, ive only been weight training 4 weeks and ive already outgrown 100kg of plates. A bench with rack is no good for safe squatting either, really need a squat rack else you'll always been holding back.

Still as a beginner I'd recommend it's better to go to a gym to get a feel for what you can do.

Just paying for some crappy home equipment can be a waste of time IMO as really it can cost £1000s to get decent stuff.

Cheers for the advice so far guys. I am skint with not lots of money to pay but i've read up on a lot of exercises you can do with just dumbells. Would it be worth buying protein aswell?

Also, the Jungle place? Wtf is that? Amazon?

In which exercises have you 'outgrown' 100kg of plates? And there's more variations to squat than a simple squat. You can do Hack squats without a rack, Overhead squats without a rack etc. you don't need all the recommended traditional equipment to build a physique or strength at all, just some variation in your exercises. If you're telling me you've outgrown 100kg in your squats? Try doing 3 sets of 20 hack squats and tell me you've outgrown 100kg.

@powlesY no, don't buy protein. Just read up on diet and get that looking good.

You are rather large arent you? 100kg to a big person compared to a small person can be quite a difference ;)

Yes but if someone's following a traditional strength routine, why would they ever want to do 3x20 on hack squats? Even a hypertrophy routine wouldn't see you hitting those sorts of reps. So yes, it certainly won't take you long to out grow 100kg with deadlifts or squats :) Especially if like Tom you've been quite a big lad prior to lifting.
