See people moan about benefit work dodgers but for the last 60years th queen has been mooching off our taxes, yet we are supposed to celebrate WTF

Apparently the WHOLE COUNTRY is celebrating this old lady. Sorry to disappoint the Royalists but we should have done what the French did to royalty 200 years ago, bon voyage.

Im starting to like the Royals, first the wedding last year with a bank holiday, now this with two days off.

Hip hip horrayyy :p

I am working Sunday and Monday night, so effectively working over both bank holiday days.

Am I getting any extra pay? Nope. Can I refuse to work? Nope. Great :)

Worked every bank holiday this year so far.

i'm sorry but explain to me she actually does?

She's the head of state. There are a whole slew of political and diplomatic functions associated with that.

She gives in excess of £200M a year (it was £230.9M last year) to the country from her own pocket. Not as taxes (she pays those as well, on the remainder of her income). That's in addition to taxes, as a voluntary donation. Where do you think we could find someone else who would work as head of state (we do need a head of state) and give the country >£200M a year in exchange for nothing? And yes, she does get nothing. The money ignorant people think she gets is for head of state expenses, which would have course be incurred regardless of who was head of state.

She has ceremonial functions, which are a part of our cultural heritage.

She's a political backstop against tyranny. An insurance policy, if you like. She still has the authority to command the armed forces, make the government redundant, dissolve the entire parliamentary system and rule by decree. In extreme circumstances, she's the anchor for stable revolution by legitimising it.

She's spectacular value for money and that's without even considering the enormous golden egg - tourism. Any business with enough money could build a fancy palace somewhere, but ours attract tourists because they're real. Disney could build a palace and put an employee in a costume in it, but fake isn't real.

OK, put your money where your mouth is and accept the same deal she has. I'll give you what the country gives her:

You work for me, promoting me, entertaining my guests, etc.

I pay you nothing.

You give me lots of money.

I keep 83% of it.

I give you 17% of your money back, but only on condition that you spend it all only on the expenses you occur in your work for me.

Are you going to take up that offer? You'd be mooching off me, right? That is what you described as "mooching off" people.

Please, feel free to "mooch off" me for the next 60 years with that deal. Or just admit that you were wrong to a frankly embarrassing degree because you didn't bother finding out anything about the subject before posting.

Utter rubbish, France does rather well out of tourism and they had a monarchy. The UK will still do brilliantly without a royalty, in fact it is rather insulting to all of us that are not in the royal family and are British is that without the royal family we'd be up **** creek tourism wise.

Once the current Queen of England gets her rather obvious reward of being on the throne longer than Victoria, hang the lot of them.

Disguised swearing is no better.

You'd better edit that post immediately.

I don't think he was implying that there would be no tourism in this country without the monarchy, just that it is a very big draw that does so.

Ever been to Buckingham Palace?
Have you seen the crowds of tourists there... Most who visit London go to see it and whether the Queen is in.

You also have to remember that our long standing history and traditions involving the monarchy, like the changing of the guard for example are a world away from what many other countries have. In particular North America who don't have a monarch but do have a great interest in the Royal Family, and Canada of course more so because of the commonwealth.

I'm doing my GCSEs i'm off on monday and tuesday anyway i just don't want to have to wait *** please fully star swearing in future *** 6 days for a package that should arrive today but their not going to put it on a flight til next wednesday because of her jubilee thing it just is iritating me and tbh i'd rather be in school and have my package than not be in school and have to wait 3 more days

Yep, I can guess how you feel. But that is life, it happens sometimes!

We do have probably one of the most globally recognised royal family and heritage though. Look how popular the wedding was last year, everyone knows who the queen of great Britain is. Even back to the Diana days and when she died it shook the whole world.
