I just had an wonderful idea, probably too obvious that nobody has thought of it before. Instead of using regular gun powder inside bullets, why don't they use a little tiny bit of TNT or other HE inside the bullet as the propellent instead? Surely that would create a much higher velocity and hence more power (ft/lbs). I wonder if I might be able to sell this idea to the military?
 
I read this question on 4chan's /k/ board before.

The pressure generated by HE is just too much for your standard firearm and will blow it apart.
 
Obviously you wouldnt use it in a normal gun, you'd need a special barrel, possibly utilizing magnets in some way.
 
There are probably many reasons why. I'd imagine the amount of money the military spend on R&D, if it was plausible, they would have done it by now.
