Unemployed bussed in to steward jubilee, unpaid and asked to sleep rough

They don't volunteer. This "workfair" scheme is only voluntary in the sense that you lose your benefits if you don't "volunteer".

Wrong

Forcing people to work against their will for no money is slavery

It wasn't against their will it was voluntary, and it wasn't unpaid, they get benefits, its only fair really that they bother to give something back to the society that's paying to keep them if they have the chance.

How many hours would you be willing to do? Or would you be a good boy and just work work work and be happy about it?

I've worked in some pretty bad jobs in the past rather than sitting back and demand money from others to fund my lifestyle, why is this different?

what has created this entitlement culture?

Perhaps they get hypothermia and have to go to hospital, who's paying that hospital to keep that man healthy?

Everyone else, so frankly there is a line between useful benefit backed work and flat out exploitation, if they at least provided them some shelter, then nobody would care, however living under bridge is in no way shelter.

For the sake of the argument i am presenting, it may be exaggerated.

What's the alternative? Oh, sponging off the state and using what money would otherwise be available to people who genuinely can't work due to no fault of their own, who struggle to get by on a pittance.

Well, if a company has enough work for someone to work 30hrs unpaid then maybe employ that person?

I know a **** load of people who are going to be sleeping rough over the next week...At the download festival!

They're being asked to camp out are they not? It's not like they're homeless. Prepare!
Take a tent and a sleeping bag -_-

So you would do, hmm, say 80 hours of work a week for your benefits? Or would you climb off your horse and say, nah, that's just unfair.

I worked a fulltime job for benefits for 3 months, It helped me to get into paid work in the sector I wanted

When dolph steps in, the right wing meter goes critical.
Come on dolph, this isn't acceptable is it? Have some sympathy here, you can't assume all of these were dole scroungers.

It's amazing to see who actually reads the article and who reads only the title!

Yes, YOU! this is being blown totally out of proportion... :S

They volunteered for work, it was hard work not some cushy number, they got training and equipment given to them, and because the was no 4 star accommodation and free lunch a couple of people whined to the press who sensationalized it to hell.

Oh no waaaah! while waiting for our job we had to sleep at the meeting point that was under a bridge waaah! Seriously? people sleep rough outside cinemas and shops waiting for film/console releases and their whining that they had to have a kip under a bridge because they arrived a few hours early? bah.

And oh noes! it was raining and all they gave us was a waterproof poncho to go with our free combats/boots/etc. and all we got out of this was an NVQ Level 2 in spectator safety and the chance for paid work at the Olympics :O

Beggars can't be choosers, or grateful it seems...

The government, the media, capitalism (or at least faux capitalism).

I dont need to describe what the government and media have done, i think its overly obvious...government likes its votes and the media likes the rather ridiculous stories that come out of it.

Capitalism in its current state, which is not entirely being true to itself any more, tells people to stop caring about their financial state, they must simply spend til they drop, although in case of people on benefits, the government happens to become a middleman in borrowing the money for this culture of rampant consumerism.

I really do not know any more, i suppose people just cant help subsidising their parenting with buying the newest toy for their children to make them happy and obedient for a moment, getting jealous of a neighbours car or lawnmower and wanting something similar...and numerous other human impulses.

Its just created a culture of people that would rather go bankrupt than be seen as "poor".
