Hi all, looking for a nice weekend away with the Mrs up in the Lakes for sometime in July/August.

I've never been to the Lakes (well I have when I was about 6) so don't really remember much but am looking for suggestions/ideas for a nice place to stay up there. Are there many places with like log cabins by a lake etc or am I being too American in my ideas, lol?!

Also would like some stuff to do whilst we're there, be it taking a boat out on a lake, going for some nice walks etc.

Depends how far away you want to get from civilization really.

Wasdale/Eskdale is probably the nicest & best area in the Lake District to get away from the crowds with spectacular mountains in every direction you look, and not to mention Wast Water lake, deepest lake in England I think. But iirc I don't think a lot of things happen on it apart from snorkeling mainly. It is also very quiet area. Nether Wasdale is really the 'town center' of Wasdale, where it has 2 very nice pubs/B&B's but that's about it for some way. I have stayed in these cabins at the Wasdale National Trust campsite - http://beta.nationaltrust.org.uk/holidays/camping/camping-pods/view-page/item471631/.

Derwent Water is very nice also and it's a bit more built up with lots of activities on the lake and shops etc around it so might be a bit more where your looking for.

We dont want to be miles and miles away from civilization really.

Will check out that link for the Wasdale ones and do a bit of research into Derwent.

Anyone any other recommendations - is there anything good near Windermere?

There's a lake.

I almost stayed here once, but then couldn't get there because of snow :( - was only one night so didn't seem much point in killing ourselves to get up there for one night.

Have stayed in Grasmere a couple of times with my class (at the youth hostel, our residential trip), it's a lovely spot. It's worth a visit even if you're not staying nearby.(RAF fighter planes go flying down the valley over Grasmere so be warned, you will probably **** yourself the first time it happens.) Visit the Gingerbread shop - best gingerbread in the world, ever. :D

Not far from Windermere et al.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider Windermere or Ambleside. 1 of the attractions of the Lake District for me in the piece and quiet you get in the further out areas of the park. not to mention the scenery gets much more interesting rather than seeing Greggs and KFC everywhere.

Windermere is the London of the Lake District, and in the time you want to go, it will be rammed full of tourists.

I suppose it's not so bad if you have children going with you as there lot's more for them to do but good luck finding a nice, chilled place to eat/drink/sleep while your there :)

There's no KFC in Windermere or Ambleside and there's one Greggs in both towns...

x2 for Grasmere, lovely place. If you're staying in the Lakes for a few days, I'd heavily recommend taking a day to go to Grizedale Forest, especially if you like walking or cycling.

Fair enough, it's been some time since I visited those areas so was just an assumption really, my bad.

I just don't personally see what the attraction is for visitors in Windermere, other than the lake obviously.

There are much more interesting & better places to visit in the Lake District than there.

Also +1 for Grasmere.

This funnily enough happened to my Dad me and brother the first time we went to the lake district. Ironically we was on a boat on Windermere lake and 1 flew over, we nearly fell out of the boat it made us **** ourselves that much lol, didn't even see the thing it was going that fast.

Im open to other suggestions aswell, anywhere in the Lakes really. Both cabin by the lake style, or hotel style.

Just trying to weigh up the options and see what people recommend!

Most of the good self-catering places won't do short breaks during the main season. There will be exceptions if you can find them, but the norm is for them to do weekly stays from Friday to Friday or Saturday to Saturday.

No advertising of businesses or self promotion.
