for the past week or so my computer has only been booting on the odd occasion.

i usually have to turn it of and on over ten times before the boot screen shows up on my monitor.

at first i thought it might be my vertex 3 dieing, but the same thing happens when i try to boot into bios
been working fine or over a yr until now.

any ideas?

Welcome to troubleshooting hell.

I don't know how stable the system is. Memtest can only test the RAM if the system posts. You can remove the RAM and try individual sticks, one at a time. PSU could be at fault or maybe even your GPU...do you have onboard gfx?

Might i suggest downloading ultimatebootcd or a similar bootdisk. It's packed full of handy diagnostic tools for the RAM,CPU, mechanical HDDs etc

it dose eventually post after umpteen times turning it on and off.

it powers up with everythin on inside the case, but just nothing come up on screen.

i'm on it now and everything seems to run fine, it's just a nightmare getting it on in the first place.

Sounds like the PSU to me bud or the mobo has an intermittent fault :( If it was the RAM i have a feeling you would be getting BSODs aswell.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

This....^
I had trouble like this on my old PC, it started booting only when it wanted, that turned out to be the PSU. but all you can do is eliminate all other parts first.

My system presents exactly the same symptoms when I leave the wireless transceiver for my mouse hooked up to F_USB1. Got anything similar to ON/OFF Charge there?

I had a similar problem when I first built my PC. It was the RAM slots for me, basically anything in A1 or A2 and it wouldn't post. I had to use B1 and B2 slots. Try one stick at a time in each slot.

well i cleared cmos and then for some reason i had to completely reinstall the bios via usb

done this while connected to the monitor via dvi to the on board gpx.
so stuck the gpu back in and connected it with the dvi and it seems to be booting every time now (so far)

so i don't know if the bios update has fixed it or it was simply the hdmi cable

well at least it's behaving now :)
thanks guys
