Any owners here with the 2.5 V6? Just wonerding how good the cars are and the engine?

Any major faults and problems to look for? I take it there are based on the old mondeo platform? And the engine would be the samee?

The look very good value for a comfy coupe?

Never owned a cougar but owned the ST24 with the 2.5 v6 engine.

Fantastic engine with a great note. Seems a very reliable engine.

Had a cougar 2.5 for six years.
The engine is pretty solid as long as you keep the oil 5/30 topped up to the max.
Chain driven cams so no belt to worry about.
Things to look out for , play in the front wishbones. £150 per side.
Check the rear subframe for corrosion.
Pretty solid otherwise.

never had one myself but used to drive Mondeo's.

not sure if this applies to the Cougar but I remember on the ST24 there was a problem with the water pump impeller. Was an easy fix though. I think it was that they were originally plastic and broke, so to fix there was a metal replacement. Happy to stand corrected though.

Hi, thanks for the replys guys. I picked up a 2001 2.5 V6 Ford Cougar in Green  Didn't realise they were such a big car! For an 12 year old motor they have quite a bit of kit, full leater with bucket seats in the back! Full heated seats, A/C TC, ABS... Trip computer and Xeons. The Seats are amazing and so supportive its such a comfy and excellent place to be driving. The V6 makes an incredible noise on full chat!! :)

How much do you reckon it set me back???

That and the engine I reckon, nobody want big wafty old 2.5 V6 motor doing 20-30MPG and £145 Road Tax. All = a second hand bargain.

£575 is a bargain for such a car. Awful colour though, i hate dark green cars unless they are a JAAAAAAAAG.

Had the car over a week now and for the money I paid what a fantastic motor :)

It needs a few little jobs doing on it such as a new front windscreen due to a crack, it just passed an MOT so it should be ok but I don't feel comfortable having a crack according to Autoglass it is too big to fill in. All 4 tyres need replacing with a decent set of alloys, they are all missmatched and the Alloys have seen much better days. Plus a dent above the front arch.

Shouldn't cost too much to sort out and I reckon the car would be worth more when I come to sell.

Inside is a nice place to be with full heated leather seats and very comfy bucket style seats. Everything works inside and for an old car it has a few cool toys, AC, Trip computer, Sunroof, CD + 6 CD Changer in the boot, ABS, Traction Controll etc...

The enigne makes a fantastic noise, the 2.5 V6 is a joy to listen to with the window down, I have never owned anything over 2.0 so it's new to me! It has some pace when going 0-60 in around 8s is not bad but once in gear you can feel the engine pull very nicely.

Fuel wise it is not that good tbh, but what do you expect from a 12 year old V6, I think I may buy some engine and injector cleaner to see if I can improve it a bit, currently avg 25.1MPG it can get to 30MPG but most of the time it is around 25 or below.

For a 12 year old Ford for £570 the Cougar is a fantastic bargain :D

25mpg isn't bad for an older V6 if that's a mixture of around town and short motorway stints. If you take it for a long run you should see an easy 30, try running some cleaner through it too as you've said, can't hurt for £20.
