Wanting to upgrade - AMD GPU

I'm currently running a ATI Radeon HD 6850 1024MB GDDR5 graphics card, and would like to know a decent priced upgrade, the amount of available cards just confuses me, especially when I hear some 512MB graphics cards are better than some of the 1024MB graphics cards. I'd rather stick with AMD but I could switch to a Nvidia if somebody knows of a decent alternative to my card that will work with an AMD CPU and a ASUS M5A78L-M LX motherboard.

If you know anything about processors and would like to give me some advice, I also have a thread here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18413512

Thanks! :)

They overclock extremely well, and it's very easy to do. Just a case of moving the slider across in the CCC. :)

If you buy a 7850, my advice is to make sure you take advantage of its overclocking capabilities. Such a waste otherwise. :)

Catalyst Control Panel? so that means I can overclock my 6850 right this second?

Yes, CCC = Catalyst Control Center. :)

Indeed it does. :)

My advice would be to try small increments with core and memory clocks, try a game or three, then if all is good, you can up it a bit more and re-test again. Keep an eye on the temps.

Gonna look into that as it may be a month or so until I can afford a new card, is there a program I can use to monitor temps? The only one I've seen was, well I cant even remember what that was. :(

The CCC will show the temps. Alternatively, you can use MSI Afterburner.

With a FX-4100, the benefit of 7850 has over 6850 could be nullified due to CPU bottleneck large number of games (that are relatively CPU demanding).

If I was to put FX-4100, FX-8150 and 6850 on a scale, I would look to get rid of the AMD CPU and board and go for a Intel build before upgrading graphic card.

If I whack it to max OC will I explode my house? Where would you recommend starting on the slider?

Thanks. :)

It's been a while since I've had my last AMD / ATi card, so my recollection probably isn't ideal. Someone with an AMD gpu is bound to drop into this thread and will advise you further.

The best I can advise atm is to recommend that you do it in smaller increments, rather than go from zero to max. It probably wouldn't do any damage, though it is possible.

CPU before GPU, then? Makes sense, I have heard that my 6850 can hold its own, whereas my CPU basically isn't even made for gaming  which is kinda disappointing as Overclocker's could have just put an older cheaper proc into the rig and save everyone abit of money, while giving me a better gaming rig? :p

I'm gonna look into that now, will my 6850 when overclocked make any difference considering I have a pretty bad CPU for gaming?

Also:

Not quite sure what to alter here tbh. :p

Try increasing the 'High Performance GPU clock settings' or 'Core Clock' to 800, and the 'High Performance memory clock settings' or 'Memory Clock' to 1025.

Run a few games with a program like Fraps or Afterburner to monitor the fps. Don't forget to check the temps, but with these small overclocks I'm sure the temps won't rise much. :)

+ manually set your fan control to at least 75%, it may be loud but this way you shouldn't put too much heat through your gpu.

Once you hit desired clocks, then you can play about with the fan control or simply leave it on auto, depending on temps of course.

Get yourself Afterburner, you can set an on screen display that will show you real time temps while you try games/benchmarks for stability.

I have Dxtory which i paid for () lol its great software, a lot better than FRAPS. Downloading Afterburner now. :)

So raising the fan control will override it into using the fans at a high rate regardless of whats happening? I don't mind the noise so long as it ain't gonna damage anything when my rig isn't using much.

Set it to 75% manual and the noise is TERRIFYING ME! Is this bad!?
