I need help! (USB Ports)

Well basically,

I have a Pro Version of DriverMax and it installed a new driver for my USB Ports. After that, it stopped working. It's been like this for ages now, i rolled the USB driver back to see if that'd work but it didn't.

I tried disabling the driver and re-enabling it, no joy! I also tried putting one of those USB Sticks that light up when plugged in and when I plugged it in, there was no life from that either.

Basically, my USB Ports have died. I have a HP Pavillion PC and the two ports at the front aren't working and neither are the four at the back.

Help would be greatly appreciated,

Always do manual updating, never, ever use software to help find and update the drivers for you. Best uninstall DriverMax, these sort of things can do more harm to your system than good.

What HP model is it?

Yeah, thinking of it alright.
Well I'm not entirely sure of what it's called its been so long since i got it but the model number in "System" is "a6421.uk"

But I can't see the USB/chipset ones...

USB drivers are usually part of the chipset drivers if they're controlled by the chipset. Try the Nvidia link I gave and see if that can get the USB ports to work.

Yeah I'm using the 8500 GT from NVidia. That link is just static it doesn't let me download anything :/

I would suggest we reinstall the latest mobo chipset driver and must reboot PC once for the new driver to take effect.

System chipset controls the USB parts.

Seems to me all USB ports got shorted at the same time is not common unless the module that controlls the USB dies or the software that locked the USB from being used.

get a bootable ubuntu cd/usb key and try. I doubt it's hardware problem.

Hmm, only other thing I can think of is uninstalling the USB drivers through device manager and letting Windows deal with finding drivers for it.

Is that safe though? Like when I let windows search for it, it usually comes back saying it can't find any?

It usually works pretty well. If it can't find the drivers for you, or does but the USB ports still doesn't work, then you may need to resort in a full system restore. Of course this means you will need to back your files up, but you can't back up to a USB device... will probably need to back up via network then.

Another option is to try the HP utilities at the bottom of this page, and see if they can do anything: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...d=3677047&swLang=118&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2095

Or, buy a PCI USB controller card.

Yeah none of those utility tools worked :/ Think it's time for a new computer me thinks!

That isn't a sane line of reasoning. At the very least you can format your HDD and re-install windows.

You can check if the ports have power by plugging an optical mouse into them and seeing if it lights up. If they do have power, then they should be working fine. I know people who have destroyed USB ports by plugging a powered device into them using the wrong ended cable, but never a case where power worked and not data, and certainly not due to a driver fault.

Well there's obviously more to it then that. My graphics card sounds like a tractor and it's just generally slow. So yeah, I need a new one for flight simulator etc.
