AMD has had a similar GPU boost mechanism in its IGPs for a while now. Both Zacate and Trinity implement boost clockspeeds for their IGPs. Intel introduced it first though IIRC. Nvidia uses a different system unlike AMD. The AMD system is like with what Intel does for its IGPs and boosts up to a pre-determined maximum clockspeed. The Nvidia system is somewhat different,meaning the maximum clockspeed is not pre-determined for an SKU.

Yea some sort of control would be nice to have. i hate the delay of boost in game when the fps is needed

Didnt really know who was first to have i just assumed it was nv since that was the first time i heard of gpu boost :p but thanks for clarifying
 
If people that already bought 7970 and can exchange their cards for the GHz Edition free of charge, then it might be somewhat of interest. But really, I don't think people would even bother to pay the postage to send their 7970 to exchange for the GHz Edition if the GHz Edition don't guarantee a good 100-200MHz higher overclock over the standard 7970 max overclock...

I see what Rusty mean by this release being pointless. It's a little too late a release for the sake of fighting against GTX680...if they had released this GHz Edition within a month of GTX680's release, then situation might have been different.

Well 2 gig not good for high spec systems. Unless you've got tiny tables with 21" monitors on them. See how Ghz edition beats 680 in 2560 on average by over 10% closer to 15% on techpowerup if u exclude old title like call of duty and battlefiled 2 and 3dmark (who needs it?).

Other reviews are not worth looking at as 4-6 games are not enough for comparison

The lead extends to 20-30-40% in multi-monitor configuration.

I really pity those who invested in 680 in hope they'd have a "fastest graphics card" that is only quick in 1280x800
 
History repeats itself. So many people spent a fortune on 480 that only stayed the fastest card for a few months, while heat and noise stayed forever. Now thanx to GPU boost Nvidia managed to sell under par video card with a high price tag. And it got trashed after a month or two by Radeon.

This 7970GE is nothing more than an excuse for AMD to sell 7970's at the same price as 680's, the performance overall is so near anyone telling you one card is much better than the other is lying or stupid.

Running multi monitors doesn't entitle you to writing your inadequate imho

and there is no such thing like "the same" between these cards. One card is quicker in higher resolutions, other in lower. One quicker in one game, other in another. One has 1.5 times the memory of another, sometimes it helps.

So there's no such thing like "the same" unless you are testing only in BF3, which is stupid.
 
Well the one good thing about the Ghz edition is anyone who is interested in overclocking knows that if they buy a Ghz edition card it will have been speed binned by AMD so they know these cards will go higher then the normal edition cards from here on out.

AMD really needs to cut the price of its' 7950 now, if it can manage that then they will be truly competitive as it at the moment it's far to close the the GTX670 in price and way off in terms of performance.

Edit: I agree with Freddie about the 7950 pricing, only when overclocked heavily will they match/beat a 670. It seems AMD are charging for the over locking potential of these cards when not everyone over clocks. Perhaps they will be respun as a 7950 ghz edition too.
