Which one is going to be better for gaming? Looking at getting a 680 or SLI 680s.

Thanks

Honestly, a waste of money for gaming unless you really really need/want 30". These are high-end screens designed mainly for CAD/DCC/graphics work as they're wide-gamut. If money is no object then either will be great for gaming but they're not the fastest panels around. They're not "gaming screens" if that makes sense.

I'd get a faster 120hz smaller screen and save your cash for something else tbh.

(I use a U3011 for CAD work).

Cool mate thanks for the reply, I must admit the HZ30Wie appealed to me due to the 4ms input lag.

Do you have any suggestions in regards to a good smaller screen? I currently have the HP LP2475w but want something bigger/better.

It's personal preference... I chose 27" 2560x1440 PVA gaming over washed out 120Hz 1920x1080 gaming :p

I hate the colour reproduction on TN panels

Funnily enough, I went from a HP LP2475W to a Dell U3011. Although I still have to HP, running in portrait mode next to the Dell.

I would say get the Dell. Awesome screen. So much more space than the HP and the quality is top notch too.

Also play games on the Dell, such as Diablo 3, WOW, DCS A-10, FSX, etc and have not had any problems with lag or with my Sli'd GTX570's. Although I did have to turn down AA to not run into any VRAM issues.

One thing I did notice with my Dell 2711 on a ati firepro 4900, was that if I enabled 10bit support, rebooted, disabled 10bit then rebooted, it generally kept the colours as if they were 10bit? and the 10bit does give better colour reproduction. I'm a designer, so generally litho cmyk looks very close to what I get on screen. Important to point out windows aero is 8bit only!

Since its a work machine cant say I've tried anything beyond minecraft on it, might have to give doom or quake a bash on it.

well i game on a dell 30" although it is the older 3007wfp hc version, excellent monitor with no problems and games look soo nice on it.

The res really helps when gaming i find you have a much more clear picture of everything but does require some serious horsepower :(

Don't let anyone put you off a 30" screen. I got my 2008 Dell for under £500 used in mint condition at auction and I use it primarily for games. The colour needs changing but it has gaming modes and I've played some of the fastest games out at 60fps and been loving the smoothness. Also I had a choice of 2nd hand models 07,08,11 and chose 08 because it has a nice aluminium looking frame and maybe better gaming credentials than the 07 and 11 screens.

I agree. I wish I'd have got the 30" screen. I can live with the 27" though :)

I would get a HP ZR30W over both of those.

Had a HP LP2475W myself, fantastic screen but my BenQ XL2420T destroys it for gaming though it doesn't look washed out hardly at all once calibrated and Nvidia CP digital vibrancy adjusted to 60-70%.

I would like to enter the debate here on computer monitors.;) and @ cHk4.

Since basically computers started I always paid top money on the best of monitors just for the pc.

I know that they give an amazing high resolution etc and its amazing and all that (if you have the graphics card to be able to do that too remember).

But, and this is a BIG BUT, a couple of years ago, I found myself faced with the dilemma of a Tv instead of a monitor , so at the time I set about finding out what images, windows and games etc would look like on a large 42 inch full LED HD (1920x1080p) Tv, a good quality one, not a nasty cheapo.

Well well well, you know what, I found myself thinking, why the heck did I spend all these years with smaller pc monitors @ a very expensive price and then I realised just how things have moved on since the old days when windows etc looked terrible on Tv's.

When I had the proof, and I had seen it with my own eyes, I went out and bought a great 42 inch full LED HD (1920x1080p) Tv, just for pc use, and I shall never ever return to pc monitors, although I know and do fully understand why and how some people need them, but not for me, from now on it will be nice big giant screens and I will be leaving the pc monitors for good, if anyone was like me 2 years ago then I suggest you go out and have a look at a gaming pc hooked to a great or even a half decent 42inch full LED HD etc, and you will see what I mean.

Sorry for maybe jumping into a thread that wasnt needing my post here, but there again, maybe it was, lol ;)

p.s
I had all the top of range Dell's etc too by the way. :)

One thing that Im always impressed with in regards to Dell (especially the higher end models) is the number of inputs on them

If you are only ever going to connect one pc and thats it then it may not make that much difference, but imo its worth the extra cash for those inputs not present on the Hazro

Ive had a 3011 practically since they were released, and its easily one of the best monitors I have ever used (and is FAR better than any 1080p tv) - there are also other reasons NOT to get a tv instead of a monitor (all the electronics/ speakers etc that you are paying for but not using, and potential for these to cause interference etc etc etc)

I've been gaming on my 3011 for a while and it's fabulous. BF3 at 2560x1600 res is nothing short of amazing. It takes a couple of 3gb GTX580s to do it smoothly at that res and a 680 should fair very well indeed.

I tried the Hazro and was quite disappointed, although you might get lucky and end up with a decent screen.

You should also consider a smaller 120hz screen if you will mainly be playing games on it. I bought my 3011 for a mixture of games and general desktop work and the resolution is just lovely, although if I was purely gaming I would probably have gone for 120hz.

I've been tempted by a 120hz screen for a third monitor... I just keep getting put off the idea on LED backlighting and TN panel :-(

Are there any decent ones out there? (should probably start different thread, eh?)

I'd agree that as a primary monitor, a TN panel is a big no-no, however, if you are buying one as a secondary monitor, then it wouldn't be so bad.

The Benq XL2420T is a good 120hz TN monitor (or so the reviews will have you believe).

Kinda drawing myself toward the Samsung 950 - as I want the physical size of a 27"... but am thinking the pixel size will stand out like a saw thumb sitting next to my U2711 :s

The Benq appears to have a slightly lower input lag than the samsung, depending on which review you read :S But then the benq's overdrive seems to kill text, whereas the Samsun isn't quite so bad in this respect.

Could do with seeing them in the flesh - I suppose there's DSR - I just don't like using it for such things.
