chloe smith on newsnight last night

Oh dear. I couldn't watch it all. Feel embarrassed for her.

So freezing the fuel duty (which is nice) will cost money. How will they offset this? By hammering the poor? Housing benefits, etc?

Hopefully by reducing the size of the state to a more reasonable level and spending less on pointless things. Can only hope the government will scrutinize its spending more carefully and waste less - probably asking too much :p.

If you add up the "right" (as Tory, BNP and UKIP) vs. the "left" (Labour, Lib-Dem, Green) you see:

Right: 48.85%
Left: 30.28%.

That is massively skewed towards the right, in comparison to national stats, which were (in terms of popular vote and using the same groupings):

Right: 36.1%
Left: 52.0%

(plus small amounts of support for minor parties).

In terms of proportion (i.e. scaling to ignore the OcUK "not going to vote" results), the right has 61.7% of the vote on OcUK, yet only 36.1% nationally. So yes - the OcUK results ARE heavily skewed to the right.

shame mr paxman is so wasted on TV, any chance we could get him a job as the queens hatchet man to keep all the parties on the straight and narrow, might actually get something useful done for the people there supposed to serve then :D.

I wonder if there is a code of conduct for being a politician, and rule number 1 is "never answer the question".

the politicians interview code is based on 3 rules:

1) always try to answer a question with a question.

2) if you have to give an answer to a question, make sure it is not relevant to the question being asked.

3) if all else fails, LIE and pray that you don't get caught out.

I do like the way that everyone blames her for not answering the question and never bothers to question why the interviewer persists in answering a question over and over again that she has said she won't answer. This particular example is laughable as the question isn't even of any real relevance or interest, I spent the duration wishing paxman would focus on the real issue which is the rising cost of living and in particular energy and fuel rather than barracking her over minor points.

This is Paxman's standard technique. He thinks repeating a question (no matter how irrelevant or unnecessary) makes him look 'tough.' It's a superficially adequate substitute for genuine expertise.

Paxman's favourite trick is the loaded question. If you refuse to answer it on the grounds that an answer will be misconstrued, he claims victory. If you answer, he deliberately misconstrues you and claims victory. If you point out the obviously dishonest nature of the question, he insists that you must answer it anyway.

I have no doubt that Paxman was once a good interviewer, but these days he comes across as a tabloid hack with a microphone.

i despise politicians their should be a law where if they swerve around a questions or repeat the same answer the person asking them is allowed to punch them full force in the face...

i remember that one with miliband where he gave the same answer over and over again to different questions for about 2 minutes...

i bet the reporter just wanted to knock him out after that.

politicians should be more open and remember they are suposed to serve the country and not themselves

you are right. they act like they are our owners or overlords when in fact they are staff hired by us.

anyone who wants to be a politician should never be allowed to be.
