*** The official Sony Xperia S thread ***

PC Companion is telling me to connect my phone for an update, must be ICS.

Sid - yes any microsim phones. Initially just the iPhone had them, now they are being more widely adopted.

A couple more questions chaps

I have a normal sim now and looks like this phone needs a microsim. I am with O2. On their website theres a form to order a microsim but it states it for ipads and iphones. This will work with other microsim phones as well yeah?

I just went into an O2 shop and they did all the necessaries.
By the time I had walked back to the car my new microsim was activated although they do suggest it can take up to 24 hours.

Anything else i should know before i take the plunge?

I am coming from an x10 now so Im aware it will come with some sony bloatware. Can you just uninstall it?

I don't want to flash the phone at all apart from the ICS update. I hope thats straight-forward on a simfree phone.

I don't think I wil be doing anything exotic on it compared to what I use my phone for now so it should all be within specs.

Cheers

Why are you getting it, and how much for?

I like the thought of high res screen + 32gb storage. Size seems decent. I don't want anything too big.

I will pay about £370ish for it.

Its this or the HTC one S basically.

Yeah, I'd say it's fairly evenly matched with the One S in most respects. Though the One S internals are a lot better, as is the battery life.

I know the Xperia S may seemingly have a far better camera, but there's not much in it, though the camera button is a plus.

Tried them both in a shop?

Nah I haven't tried either tbh, I might well do next week.

I've never liked the look of the HTC phones tbh, 2 years ago it was the desire or the xperia, looks like a similar choice now.

SGS3 is too big and expensive tbh.

I wouldn't pay more than £250 for a new Xperia S now, there's 4 new high end Sony phones that'll replace it soon. (1.7GHz S3 powered X-SL, S4 powered X-SX/X-GX/Mint)

If your desperate get one off Amazon for £280.

It will come down to the screen, storage and android skin in the end, going by what you have said there.

Pretty much just going to echo what Robbo said, the one S is the better phone overall and if you aren't too keen on SE's android skin and want something that will work out of the box, then the S with sense V4 is great for that, you shouldn't be disappointed, IMO sense V4 is very nice, feels polished throughout and the apps/widgets have a very unified feel to it, you don't really have to faff about at all with 3rd party apps etc.

Everything you need to know about the one S is in my review of it (below in sig) and Robbo has done a great guide as to which phone to get, which covers the S and compares it to the other top 2 phones, the X and GS 3:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18417660

For storage on the S, you get 10GB for videos, photos etc. and 2.21GB for apps, if that isn't enough for you then the XS is the better option or something else like the GS 2 would be a better device, just to give you an idea as to what the storage is like:

I have over 70 apps installed (including a few games as well), over 700 photos, that also includes a lot of 1080P footage as well as slow motion videos and N64, SEGA etc. emulator ROMS and I have 1.67GB left for apps and 6.10GB left for user file storage.

You also get 25GB of dropbox storage for the next 2 years.

Also something else to consider is the new version of android, jelly bean, no idea if the XS will get it, if it does, then it will be a long wait again no doubt, where as with the S you can be pretty much guaranteed that the one S will get it and a lot quicker than the XS.

The camera on the S is very good (one of the best things about the phone IMO), only let down by slightly jerky 1080P video recording and over saturating reds on auto settings. It is feature packed, more so than any other device and the sense gallery has loads of editing features, which are great.

Again as Robbo said you will have to have a nice long play with both devices and see which one you prefer :)

Just picking up on what Sid said about microsims.

Do they not just cut your normal SIM down to size in the UK?
I'm in Shanghai and they just put my old normal SIM into a device that looks like a stapler, it made a horrible crunching sound, then my SIM popped out the other end as a microsim. No messing about with getting anything new or re-activating !?!?

Secondly, I'm popping back home to blighty in a couple of week and will need a cheap and cheerful UK SIM for a couple of weeks. So can you pick up prepaid microsims in a newsagents or do they still only sell full size sims ?

Thanks for the advice chaps.

I have to say I'm not seeing these low prices anywhere tbh.

Are mobile phone seller competitors?

Very tempted by the htc one S now as well.

Got to say the battery life is impressive under ICS.
The idle battery discharge is minimal, so as a low user I'm getting over two days between charges (with juice defender).
Going to disable juice defender and try it.

Good news (don't think this has been mentioned yet). A guide has come out to root your phones even if your bootloader is locked. It's a little long winded - going to try it later.

Be careful about which version of Flashtool you use - just nearly bricked my phone.

I used 0.8 and used the 0.8>0.86 update.

Hi guys every time I try and update my Xperia S it won't let me. I get message telling me the "software has been modified" I have definitely not modified it. The only thing I can think is when I bought it I was sold has sim free and the last owner could have had it unlocked.

Is there anything I can do? I was thinking of going Stafford and seeing if the Sony Center there can do anything. I just hope it's not expensive to sort out.

This should help - post #2.

RE Rooting. Finally got mine rooted but it was a right hassle! Here are a couple of hints from the me and the thread.

  • It's important to have Stock GB .75, NOT .73.
  • Download Flashtool 0.80 and the 0.8>0.8.6.0 - had major problems with other versons
  • When it says daemon started successfully, just wait a few minutes, it will work. If it doesn't work in 5 minutes, then restart the whole process again. Make sure you do have the needed ADB drivers installed for the process to work
  • To check if it all worked, download SuperUser from play store. Then, download "Root Check Basic"
  • Always close Flashtool every time it finishes
  • The guide mentions turning the phone on after a stage whilst plugged in - this didn't work for me so I unplugged, quickly turned on and plugged back straight in

Safe apps list (ones that you can remove safely) can be found here. Reclaimed some more RAM :)

Stolen from Grrrrr in the 'what is rooting' thread:

1. Better backups (nandroid): You can perform a complete clone of your phone that you can restore at any time
2. Better backups (Titanium): You can backup any app and its data, including system apps.
3. Remove unwanted system apps and bloatware
4. Control what apps can access on my phone. E.g. deny apps from accessing my location or call list. (I use LBE for this)
5. Install custom ROMs (community generated firmware basically)
6. Install performance mods
7. Install themes such as different notification bars
8. Change the screen density of my phone. (It’s kind of similar to changing the resolution on old CRT monitors)
9. Delete unwanted sounds, e.g. camera clicks
10. Some useful apps require root
11. And of course, with this being OcUK, I have to mention... Overclocking

Well this is odd. My update progress bar slows down massively on the "Preparing Computer for Update" and then comes up with an error. Any ideas anyone? :(
