Eating breakfast at work

I have noticed recently that a good chunk of my colleagues wait until they get to work before eating their breakfast. They wait for about half an hour after starting, then go to the kitchen and bring back toast, cereal etc to eat at their desks. I think this is disgusting and pretty unprofessional -surely the norm is to eat in your own house, then go to work ready to work? I would love the extra 15 minutes in my bed this would give me, but I am being paid to work, not to eat.
Does anyone else have this?

As long as it's not in the view of customers/clients i don't see a problem with it,so what happens when it comes to lunch is that bad aswell eating at their desks.

Eating's disgusting? OK.

The acceptability surely depends vastly on the type of workplace it is and, well, whether it's allowed or not.

I do it every day. Gives me an extra 15 minutes in bed and means I can wake up before eating (always have trouble eating for the first hour or so in the morning). I normally arrive about 20 minutes early though because of trains. Several of the others do it as well so it's pretty typical.

OP you should try it, it's good! And you can do some work like answer emails while you're doing it. ;)

I have breakfast at my desk too, don't really feel like eating as soon as I get up. My office only has 3 others in it but many other people do this in the open plan parts of the building.

Yes.

Every office I've worked at in the last five years has also provided cereals and bread.

With offices these days, people don't always get the time to step out for breakfast/lunch/dinner, so eating at your desk has just become something that people have to do.

I eat continuously through out the day. cant eat as soon as I wake up. don't do it in front of customers so not an issue. plus I can multi task, eating and working aint that hard :p

I don't see the problem if it's an office - It would be unprofessional if you were meeting with clients and got out a bowl :p But not if you're just at your computer doing your thing :p

A lot of people do it at my work as well and I agree with the OP, it's disgusting. Work kindly provides free milk for teas and coffees only yet people using it for their breakfast cereals means quite often we're without in the afternoon. Plus they don't do the washing up, leaving dirty crockery on their desk all day.

Another annoyances is grown men wearing shorts to the office, but I guess that's the subject of another thread.

Most people are going to eat at some point during the working day. What difference does it make what time they do it? Most people at my work eat breakfast at work, but then we do start at 6am.

I know a lot of work colleagues who eat cereal at their desk. It's more efficient if anything.

I quite often grab a sausage sandwich of whatever on the way to work and eat it at my desk, then I don't need to worry so much about rushing in the morning.

You can eat and work at the same time OP, I think your salary should be deducted for poor multitasking.

Everyone at my office does, i personally don't but then i really don't eat breakfast.

I never used to eat breakfast either. Then I started eating it at work and I actually enjoy it now, with the added benefit of a bowl full of porridge filling me up 'til lunch.

i think what OP Is getting at is eating when you are supposed to be working and not necessarily that "eating at the desk" is bad.

I have been eating just around 9am when i start work. But recently had problems with manager as other people are taking the mick (not about breakfast but other things) so manager had a meeting saying we should start at 9am and if having breakfast eat before 9am.

I dont personally agree with this because

a) Like others said you take a bite of toast and you work... it is called multi-tasking
b) You are allowed to have tea/coffee which is essentially same i.e. you sip instead of taking a bite
c) forgot to add: people can chat for x amount of minutes, can have a ciggie break but eating your breakfast is a no no

I eat at work because if i eat at 7am then i will be hungry by 11 so I would have to have mid-morning snack so i would rather eat at 9 and then eat lunch at 1.
