Without experience you will have to rely on certification to get a foot in the door. If your sure of your skills it might be worth sticking a few adds in the papers. Even if you dont get much money its all experience :)

2.2 BA hons
And very nearly an MSc

Contemplating progressing to a PhD as it seems pathetically competitive for anything at the moment, at least while completing a PhD I would hopefully be able to get some lecturing experience which would be help me to progress onto an academic career

@OP do your college course, look for a basic IT job and while working, study for extra qualifications, then try to move into network admin, thats my suggestion.


Experience goes a LONG way i've found while applying for IT jobs.
 
9 GCSEs + a Maths Extension paper of unspecified level
4 A Levels (all As)
Master of Mathematics (2:2)
BSc Life Sciences (1st)

I'm about to finish an MSc Molecular Genetics, and about to start a PhD.

The same can be said for majority of jobs.

I have 11 GCSEs, 4 A levels, 1 BSc (2:1) and I'm in the food industry by accident, but loving it.

Given a choice, I would have done a degree with a definite sandwich industry experience (like the German Uni), my Pharmaeutical Science degree had an optional industry where I had to fight head to head with many other applicants to get a placement. In hindsight, I would have worked 1 year for food / maintainence loan just to get experience under my belt before job hunting after graduation.

2:1 in Chinese studies (technically it's MA Chinese, but it's a Scottish MA :p)
CELTA for teaching English

I think I once did an A+ too, but I don't remember if I ever finished it, was about the time I lost interest in computers.

and just finished the first year of my degree averaging 75% :D

I would also suggest that you don't assume the standard higher education route is for you. It was a necessity for me, I wanted to become an academic researcher, it is most certainly not the best route for some professions.

I would also agree with this. Some professions a degree is essential - others not so. For what I do and want to have my career in, a degree would not really have helped. Some may argue that it demonstrates a level of learning, and yes that's the case, but you can also demonstrate that with industry and vendor certs of certain levels along with real world demonstratable work/goals.

My fiance is a games programmer and all his BIT (soft.eng major) has done is look pretty. He is mostly self taught and is very successful.

Myself on the other hand required both my degrees to work in the professions I chose. Neither could be done legally without the degrees.
