I have a huge DVD collection and still buy most movies on DVD as they are cheaper and IMO many of them dont 'need' to be high definition.

The exceptions I think are movies that really show off high definition blu-ray - the most obvious is Avatar - and movies with epic scenes and amazing special effects.

Im looking to buy some new Blu-rays and open to suggestions, so name me a movie that really benefits from high definition.

Echo the Pixar recommendations. Also ...
Inception
Dark Knight
The Shining - haven't seen this on Blu Ray but it's my next buy
Sunshine
Alien Blu Ray collection
Casino Royale - Not a fan of the film but the picture quality is right up there with the best
Red Cliff and Tropic Thunder both get good reviews for picture quality aswell.

When most music first started to be released on CD as well as tape and vinyl, I used to buy most things on tape because they were cheaper:(

Hugo 2D for pic quality

Dark side the moon - pic and sound - one best blu ray sound mixes so far

Tron 2D is a special, Blu Ray

Real Steel

Avatar - special collectors extended edition

Lord Rings - Return King

Ratatouille

Apocalypto, i thought, was visually stunning. This is a quote from blu-ray.com when they reviewed it.

"Detail is breathtaking, contrast absolutely astounding and clarity amongst the best I have seen on Blu-ray. The color-scheme is equally strong: the lush colors seen throughout the film are so impressive that at times it is nearly impossible to focus on the story (or reading the subtitles). The rich greens of the jungle, the blues, browns and yellows prevalent at the Mayan city as well as the deep blacks (the well fragments) are all simply perfect. Grain on the other hand is practically unnoticeable. Given the manner in which Apocalypto was shot, the sharp, at times piercing, visuals are indeed a byproduct of Mel Gibson's stylistic and technical preferences."

This blu-ray can usually be bought for around 6 quid so it is well worth it.
