I have 50meg with VM and it is by a mile the best speed I can get in my area, BT offers 8meg and I don't like Sky their site is a pain to use. However we are having massive amounts of trouble with wifi at the moment.

Would getting a router and having the super hub in modem only mode be any use and if so what is a good inexpensive router to get for a medium sized house?

Firmware updates might improve the wireless, but yes putting it in modem mode and buying a router will probably improve things.

Given that the VM router is inexpensive anyway, buying another cheap one isn't a great idea. People here tend to buy something like this:

It should give you much better performance and wireless coverage - I'm saving for one myself as it will also give me more flexibility in where I place the wireless router (I have Cat6 running to the centre of my flat) to improve signal strength that way too.

I'm on the 100mb package and I upgraded to a N56U router. Difference is night and day. Better coverage, stability and response. Highly recommend investing in a router.

Beware that some routers max out at 100mb on WAN so something to bear if upgrading your line in a few years.

I will be getting a free upgrade to 100meg shortly, however the wireless will only every be used for youtube/browsing and maybe some HD Streaming.

The N56U is way out of my price range though, I'm 18, learning to drive and do not have a job or any income.

If you can't get a decent new replacement, then stick with what you got for now as Virgin are releasing firmware updates and it may be fine for you. If you do have issues with it buy an older model of a quality router second hand.

Routers are one thing where paying for quality really makes a difference imo.

I understand paying for quality makes a difference but at the moment we cannot even use wifi the hub is that bad. We cannot get good signal from 2 rooms away and after 11pm it cannot be connected to.

Or as an alternative but still FAR superior to the rubbish virgin give you go for a used Dlink DIR-655 few have sold for £15 and its what im still using now and its rock solid and has all the features you could want. This was a router over £100 just a year or two back.

Just got off the phone to virgin, he basically said I've done everything possible and he has no idea what else could be an issue. He has sent out a new hub and if that doesn't fix it he said we are basically stuck with no WiFi. Pretty annoyed atm as spending £85 I don't have on a router hoping it helps is a **** take. So for the next 5 days we have no WiFi at all, this means the only thing working in the house is my personal PC in my bedroom. If the new Hub comes and still doesn't fix anything what should I do? I've tried InSSIDer and joined the least used channel and moved down to 145Mbps as it's the only one that works. However it's still down more than it is up.

Get a used Dlink DIR-655, not sure what WAN speed they can handle.

Certainly change the channel. VM pushed an update to my router and automatically changed to channel. WiFi access was terrible. Played around with it and finally got it stable.

It sounds like interference.

Did you not read the above post? I cannot change anything as nothing helps. Every now and then the hub just stops working via WiFi and I have to hard reset it. I've tried everything, even the English Technician on the phone said there is literally nothing else I can do.

I've check Ebay for a DIR-655 and there are only 2 atm.
