Virtually every single terrorist attack on British soil has been through individuals and packages. These SAMs wouldn't have been able to stop the IRA, or Al Qaeda, or the like. They can't even stop poor civilians like Charles Meneze ;) Nations capable of deploying planes requiring SAMs to take down are participating in the olympics themselves!

What on earth could the SAMs possibly be for? *chortle* fine waste of taxpayer's money, typical of the Orwellian state that Britain has been mastering for the last decade and a half now.

This post is so full of stupid I lost a load of braincells reading it.

Or have you read the terrorist handbook which explicitly states only airliners should be used to fly into stuff? Does the same handbook state they shouldn't try anything new, especially when there's going to be 100,000 or so people of all nationalities packed into one stadium, with other huge stadiums nearby?

The SAMs will at least put them off nicking a private jet and crashing it straight into the olympic stadium no?

Oh, of course, the terrorists are currently negotiating a contract for jet fighters, I heard Raphael and Typhoon were in the fly off.

You do realise that 911 was primarily caused by none existent American airport security.

One of those SAMs is more likely to be hijacked by someone from Tottenham.

Something tells me they will have armed guards to stop people getting on to the roof, and its not like we have to worry about people stealing planes and flying them into SAM batteries :P
 
Everyone would much rather they bombed a SAM than a stadium, but somehow I don't think a SAM appeals to a terrorist all that much.

SAMS are laser guided, what are you waffling on about terrorists buying fighter jets for?

You could fire one at your left nut if you wanted to.
 
This is why the government should just do stuff, 90% of the population are trying to argue against something they have no idea or understaning about.

The general populous are thick when it comes to topics such as this, and will know nothing more than what the media tells them.

Not to mention the fact, that the Gov can't tell us what threats they expect, from what sources and how likely they are to happen, without this information trying to argue if a weapons system should or shouldn’t be installed is like ******* into the wind, pointless.....

Imagine that press release: "We're deploying SAM sites because we have information that an air attack on London is going to happen. But it's okay because we're putting up SAM sites to prevent it. So back to your everyday lives everyone." :p

Sadly it's something 90% of the government has little or no idea about as well, this is all arranged with the smoke and mirrors of special advisors, civil servants and military top brass all of who have a vested interest in the outcome.

The security for these olympics is such a vast waste of money that it is quite frankly laughable, the terrorists must be laughing at as we are doing exactly what they want us to do while they have done little to nothing.

My first thought was that if some country we're not friendly with deployed missiles atop residential tower blocks we'd be accusing them of using the residents as human shields.
My second thought was that if they are using council tower blocks then the missiles will most likely be in Cash Converters window by the end of the week anyway so the first point is a moot one.
 
It's a deterrent, an absolute last resort, and also showing off to the rest of the world "look at us, we can successfully command and control an E3-D, Sea King ASACS, Typhoons, multiple sniper-laden Helicopters and SAMs, as well as all the other ground based counter terrorism measures simultaneously to deliver a safe and secure Olympics. Take us seriously." Doing less than everything possible and then something happening would make the UK look downright pathetic on the world stage - doing everything and nothing happening, whether or not the measures stop an attack, is a victory as far as the UK is concerned.
