Virgin Media Discussion Thread

So can anyone tell me why my thinkbroadband monitor keeps showing long periods of all red 100% packet loss despite having no outages at home and the router on constantly? Why would it sometimes work and sometimes not?

Its actually a 10:1 ratio but you are on a free upgrade so you wont have your upload doubled until channel bonding goes live.

I heard a rumour at work that they are considering a 3:1 ratio after channel bonding but it could have just been someone making stuff up around the office. Still 120mbps down and 40mbps up would be nice so here's to hoping :)

I have had my download speed double back last month but my upload hasn't double yet. When does this channel bonding go live?

Super hub arrived to day, easy installation, easy activation, everything synced and working and now enjoying just over 30mb speed.

Have to say very impressed so far, was getting a recoded ping of 25, that normal?

Hopefully this resolves by ongoing random dicconect issuer with my wired 360, is their any particular settings for the SH for best set up?

all working well at this end since 2months install date

ping is a lot better then it was

Does this look ok? Superhub is fine wired but **** at wireless despite trying every setup, think i may have to go down the modem mode and extra router route!

I'm thinking of going with Virgin for just broadband and phone as the Sky ADSL here is a joke, but keeping the Sky TV box and subscription as it is.

Any advice on wrangling a good deal out of them?

Yeah get a mate to recommend you so u get free installation. Also there are cash back sites that you can get about 60 quid back but when they rang me cos of the friend invite thing i discussed the free installation which was fine and i tried to get more out of them by saying well i can get this 60 quid cash back and then they said well you can go that route but install will cost because you need to do register on the website for the cashback to work and free install only works over the phone due to the friend recommendation system. But i did manage to get him to give me £30 cashback which was basically £30 off the bill as when you get the net usually they charge double or 1.5% the monthly rate due to install date to billing date differences so where it would cost about £45 or somit it just cost the normal £17.50 for the first month due to the first 3 months half price kinda thing.

Also they wanted to put the line from outside in through sitting room but i got em to do it near the pc so the lan cable from router to comp was the short 1m one for best net plus easy access to turn it off and on if needed. Couldn't stand if i had to use the long 20m lan cable i had used for router adsl connection before due to the bt socket in living room.

Anyhow hope that helps a bit.

Oh and dont get broadband and phone just get broadband and get a mobile phone, it works out cheaper as i was paying £45 ish for bt for line and phone and then £18 to Bethere for up to 24mb adsl2 (got 4mb down) with Virgin i get the XL30mb broadband for what was £28.50 a month but now its £30 a month (still good value imo) and my mobile phone i got from talk mobile which was galaxy ace for £12 a month with 200 mins 200 txts and 1gb net per month). So its cheaper and a ton better service net wise and i wasnt tied to a line rental service. :) Up to u tho just saying its cheaper but got more bang for buck that way.

Cheers Skeeter.

We're paying 55 quid all in atm for basic Sky HD, no frills landline and broadband, so ideally would be looking to save on that if possible, but looks as if its gonna be the same, if not a little dearer. Arse!

Is anyone elses WiFI from a VM SuperHub a bit on and off?

Changed my mind about this SuperHub, its a POS, speratic all over the place wireless connections, then it'll drop the connection completely etc etc.

Join quidco cashback site. At the moment they're giving £142.50 cashback, free installation and up to 6 months half price. The quidco membership will cost you £5 of that and it'll take about 2 months to be paid to you.

that's hard to believe mate :P

How are you getting it so cheap.

I pay £36 a month for 100Mb and phone line, so technically you could say I'm paying even less with the line rental being £14 a month. :p

I'm not even a long term customer, I've only been with them for about 3-4 months, I just rang retentions when I was a month in after I saw the half price line rental deals and asked for a discount, I got it. :D

Ive just checked also and im still on the r30 FW. :(

Since I called VM 2 weeks ago my connection has been much more stable. Currently awaiting Yodel (or Nodel as I prefer) to deliver my replacement SH.

What setting is the Wireless channel? Take it off Auto if its set. I use Channel 11 and have the 802.11 mode set to 145Mbps and its fine, with x2 iphones, x3 laptops :)

The R36 Firmware update is supposed to resolve a lot of the wireless issues or so they have said on the VM support forums

Does anyone know why Virgin have such weird behavior with their capping, at least for me?

Yesterday I downloaded around 50GB of games from a 2k Megapack, I downloaded the entire thing in less than an hour without being capped, at peak time on a Monday afternoon. Whereas the Saturday just gone, I downloaded Blacklight Retribution which is 4GB, and was capped after about 300mb, despite not using bandwith for anything for that entire day, let alone the 5 hours before it. Aren't weekends meant to be unrestricted? Plus it was at midnight, apparently they aren't supposed to cap at midnight at any time.

I've read the information on the website and spoke to the guy who fitted our superHUB about capping, and it just doesn't add up, why are they so weird? One day they'll let me download obscene amounts of data at peak times without capping, then another day they'll cap me after downloading nothing outside of peak times on a bloody weekend.

Any ideas?
