Blagged IT Job :)

Diagnostics isn't as easy as you think for certain areas depends what you are dealing with. You have to be able to walk before you can run. You also have to crawl before you can walk.

Sure. Im not expecting this to be a quick or easy career to start with but im very keen to learn as much as possible.

In a very similar position to the OP - only for a smaller company. No qualifications (currently doing a course part time).....they didn't care. They just wanted somebody who was a good fit for the company and could do a whole range of stuff - one of which was looking after all their IT requirements. Like the OP, I'm also getting a VM environment up and running at home to play with before I go and bring the company to its knees :D

I start in 2 weeks \0/

Oh Christ....I start in 2 weeks

Haha, good luck with that mate! Ive been on the job for 8days and we are still up and running :)

In 10 years of support I learned that 99% of problems have simple solutions, also make your life easier and document every single problem as it will occur again.

So im very quickly learning! Got myself a pocket notepad for taking down issues, requests, domain address etc etc. Its getting full very quickly!

There's a lot to learn tbh, but usually small things but you will learn for a year or two and then should come naturally. Mostly fiddling with setting, maybe writing scripts, monitoring.

I would say if there's anything your unsure about just ask and don't risk a disaster because you could actually probably cause a disaster. Don't just wing it.

Yeh, rubbish indeed this is why you see thread after thread of posts on these very forums unanswered and full problems not resolved.

Stop thinking Google has every answer because it doesn't.

Usually because the person has figured it out themselves, and abandoned the post to oblivion, annoyed about their own inability to find what turned out to be a simple solution ;)

Its not easy, sure, but its not rocket science!

Alright then, fly me to the moon right now. No reason just do it. Start now and I want you to be finished in an hours time ready for me.

Just Google it?

To someone who sent me a trust message just now regarding my previous comment in this thread. I am not kidding. Seems experience is much more vital then having a degree in this economy.

Haha, reading this before embarking on a 4 year university course on Computer Science and the debt which comes with it.

Nice one mate, I'll wish you all the luck in the world!

Think about it. Employers want people who have been working and shown proven results over a long time.

I wont automatically discount someone with a degree (and no experience) but if up against someone with 3-4 years of industry experience, what do you expect to happen?

I wouldn't hire you for the simple fact you would annoy me telling me something is easy just because it may be on Google.

It isn't always about that!
Luckily I already have a job! Phew! I'm not exactly going to go into a job interview the same way I type on an internet forum.. Chill chap :) Im not trying to be belittle anyone, just expressing an opinion?!

This guy I know at one site who likes iphones and macs, started in the post room at a law firm at 17, then moved in to first line IT support and stayed there for 8 years and now he just accepted another job for 1st/2nd line at another firm for better money and benefits.

I couldn't agree more with you. It is a shame that some study really hard to get the grades they deserve only to not have a job at the end of it. I guess it does take time, but then there is taking time..and taking the urine.
