These are the Cars I intend to test drive over the next two days, any advice on them, and what sort of prices I should be realistically trying to get them for and anything I should know would be appreciated.

Volkswagen Passat CC CC 2.0 TDI (140 PS) GT: (32k miles) £14440.

VAUXHALL INSIGNIA 2.0 SRI CDTI: (23k miles) £12999.

http://www.approach.co.uk/used-cars/VAUXHALL/INSIGNIA/2.0 SRI VX-LINE CDTI/RK61TOV

VAUXHALL INSIGNIA 2.0 SRI VX-LINE: £17999 (8.5k miles) (this is a long shot because I don't want to spend much more than £15k, but I don't know how far a dealer will go to make a sale)

BMW 320d M Sport Coupe: (55k miles) £15750.

Not px car to exchange as I have got rid of my ST tonight. So strictly a Cash sale and I would preferably like to keep it below the £15k.......

Thanks in advance.

If your looking at buying outright, I would ignore the insignia personally. Being a Vauxhall, it will depreciate faster than you can physically throw money. Im a big bag fan, so it would be the passat cc for me.

Do you really want a clattery 4 cylinder diesel engine after an ST220?

That 3 Series is a comically bad spec - cloth seats, no Satnav, but then it's at Wood BMW who had a 335i the same age and spec as that car for sale for more than half a YEAR starting at the comedy price of £27k :D

A diesel is ok, I am used to the wife Range Rover so I wouldn't notice too much.

So the 320d should be avoided, is that what you are saying?

I am leaning toward the Passat myself tbh......I was hoping to get those quoted prices down a bit and I would assume that the BMW and VW will not have too much movement in them whereas the Insignias (especially the VX spec) will have quite a bit......however I am a bit of new kid when it comes to buying used cars so don't know what to expect or what is reasonable.

Your wifes Range Rover has a slightly more refined engine than a 2 litre 4 pot..

That one certainly should. 4 years old, 55k miles, cloth seats, no nav yet it's still £15.5k.

I think I'd rather have your ST220 than the rest of that list!

Jesus, it's like choosing which way you'd rather die.

The ST went to a good home earlier tonight. :(

Ok....any suggestions on what you would do with the £15k and be aware I don't want to travel too far, so no quoting stuff in Glasgow or Manchester.

There just doesn't seem to be much choice (in the Salisbury dealers anyway) and they seemed the best options.

Arggh. I hate buying cars...

Just looked at the brief you gave in the other thread.

So you want a second car to travel to work and back, the airport and back to once a week and other short trips and you'll be doing under 10k a year?

The answer to your question is not a £15000 diesel Vauxhall, i can tell you that straight away. Have i missed something?

What about one of these? Bonkers cheap because they are not super-eco-diesels. The bottom one is the same age and mileage as the 320d Coupe, better specified, faster yet 3 times cheaper. You could buy 3 of them for the price of a bottom of the range diesel 3 Series Coupe!

You obviously liked your Mk3 Mondeo as you kept it 9 years so you've yet to be currupted by the soft touch plastics inside a German car. Take advantage of this. The 2.5T is cracking value.

Then what would you suggest rather than simply telling me what not to look at?

Sorry, not having a go, i genuinely thought i had missed something because no one else had yet said getting a £15000 diesel Vauxhall for light, 2nd car duties is insane!

Those ones that Fox just listed look decent enough - and in my opinion, much much closer to the budget i would be looking at for this type of car. From the sound of it, you basically need a semi comfortable, reliable workhorse to get you back and two to places. A £15000 car just seems like massive budget overkill considering a £6000 Mondeo will do the same job, but better.

The second one has too many miles on it and I don't like the 2.5t in that spec...I always think the new Mondeo looks weird without the sports suspension and 18" wheels of the Titanium X sports and I can't find a decent one them without travelling miles away.

I really liked my ST220......but I don't want to replace one 70k Mondeo with another 70k Mondeo.

In that case the top one has 17k on it but frankly I am not sure why it matters when its 6k.

You would be replacing a 9 year old Mondeo with a 4 year old Mondeo. Why does the mileage matter at that money?

The only thing that worries me about that is that it is a private sale and it seems very cheap.

It has the V6 petrol which is unpopular on the used market as its not particularly frugal. It's pretty much the engine from your ST, though with a few changes.

That's why its cheap. Good opportunities...
