Ideas for spending money and enjoying life more.

You said no car, which is sensible because it's a depreciating asset.

Exactly right!

Had you considered a classic car? They typically don't depreciate, some actually go up in value, free tax and cheap insurance :)

Interesting idea. Will keep it in mind.

Buy an espresso machine, I don't know how I lived without one!

Aye, that's on the list already! I love me some good coffee. :D

Scuba diving lessons?

Invest it. For example in shares. If you mar a profit then great, but with it being spare cash then there is no problem im you don't.

Start some kind of small business. It may grow.

Can you drive? Buy a track day car. I know you said no cars but this idea is a little different.

A good bike?

A motorbike?

A quad bike?

Use it to travel the UK every couple of months. Just get on a train somewhere without much planning and see where it leads. Then write a book about it.

Invest in wine or art (quite profitable).

Buy a good watch.

Use it to hire cleaners, gardeners, etc to improve your quality of life by freeing time.

There are so many options.

That's a good one, thanks! I have a friend who scuba dives and I've never done it.

One does tend to grow weary of the constant drudgery of cleaning 10 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, not to mention the arcres of grass and plants that need tending!

;)

But seriously, that is a good suggestion and I've seen this sort of thing before - essentially exchanging your money for more free time. I don't think I need this quite yet, living with a friend in a two bedroom terrace near Belfast city centre!

:D

Do you have anywhere to put an old bike or car?

Even if you do not drive yet, just practice on taking it apart and learning the basics. That way when you do get a vehicle you'll be much more clued up.

I'm in a similar situation right now! about £500 disposable income at the moment and this is my plan of action:

1. Getting a whole new wardrobe, i haven't new clothes in a couple of years. I just bought a new expensive watch and new boots and i will need jeans, tops and shirts

2. Upgrade by DVD collection to Blu-ray. I'm well into this now at roughly 60%

3. Get those insanely expensive and rare model kits I've always wanted

4. Also buying better quality food from M&S and Waitrose. It's hard to believe but you really start to feel the difference in yourself after a couple of weeks (but that also be because i cut out all the junk food)

5. Spending more money of health products to look after myself from Boots and Holland&Barrents. Starting to take multi-vitamins/wellman stuff and better quality aftershave, toothpaste, mouthwash etc.

6. Pamper yourself for better health, go to the Dentist, Podiatrist, Massage and Waxing more often

I'm already in a good expensive gym and my computer is already a beast so i won't need to upgrade for a while but if it did then that would be pretty high on my list too

You like music?

Buy some massive speakers. Go out clubbing every week on some sort of class A. Maybe not the class A part :D

Sounds like you manage your money well too Rob.

Best thing I ever did was review my finances and establish a budget.

Of course, the thing that helps tremendously is spending as little as possible on a car and rent / mortgage!

My personal rule is no more than 25% of net income on rent / mortgage and no more than 2.5% of my net worth on a car.

e.g. If I had £100,000 in savings (including pension), I would still only drive a £2500 car.

Of course, if cars are one of the things you enjoy in life, then spend more, but for me it's a means of transport and nothing more.

Thanks. Hifi is already sorted and will enter the realm of diminishing returns if I spend more now. Picked up a pair of Dynaudio Audience bookshelf speakers off the Bay a few years ago.

take a solo trip somewhere for the weekend once per month. Whip out a map, decide on a location, and fly there friday after work, return sunday. Adventures will be had ;)

I have an idea, but you may need to save up that money for a few months to pull it off.

Acquire a video camera.

Go to a bar and offer drunk men £300 to do something hilarious and probably gay. For example, walk up to a drunk group of men and make it obvious that you're filming them. Offer the money in exchange for kissing / drinking / eating something disgusting. Upload videos, become famous, finger chicks.
