London

London is our capital, but is also one of maybe 4 truly global Cities. As a Country we were the first to bring about an Industrial civilisation, for years we lived off of making machinery for other Countries, but of course eventually, everyone caught up, it wasn't hard, the use of steam, and exhaustion of the working class isn't hard to reverse engineer. The North, were mainly responsible for the manufacturing of said machinery, so as other Countries caught up, we had to diversify, especially at that point, our Empire was waning as all Empires do eventually. Seems like like financial services was the answer. Many worldwide banks have their headquarters in London, me for one working in IT, have never had a job since leaving school that wasn't for a multinational bank.

Guess, what I am saying, is, I understand the scorn aimed at London, but people have to realise that England would be a lot worse off if London never existed, or in fact was not shown favouritism. It never stops people from all over England, and indeed Britain making a life in London for themselves. London is a one off. There is nothing else like it, for better or worse.

Talking about black/brown people, and I hope there's a few posting here. Do you ever get tired of listening to the same old same old all the time? People here moan about it, in America they do, in Australia you had riots, South Africa apartheid, Eastern Europe is pretty much no go. I'm .... desperately bored of listening to it. How does it feel for you folks?

It does get a bit annoying, especially when to please them nonsensical immigration policies are put in place which would harm the country anyway. Case in point being the cap on work permits and removal of the post-study visa. How does it make sense to stop university educated people from seeking employment when they have no recourse to public benefits anyway?

America is beginning to suffer for it with entrepreneurs moving towards countries which support them such as Chile, Singapore etc. and setting up organisations there instead.

On a smaller scale and personal level, other than the visa hassles (getting a tourist visa for Europe is a nightmare I tell you), i've not really had any issues. Perhaps just the environment since I live in a very nice area in London, went to a private school, top uni etc. and have good friends, but have only one real 'incident' so to speak (just a drunk old man). One other one in a pub where a couple of guys were taking jokes a bit too far (though one of my friends, very sweetly, *really* let them have it for that.

Other than that, only other exposure to such views i've really had has been these forums. Though all of them seem to have suddenly nothing to say when I mention that I haven't claimed any public benefits, don't have access to any (except NHS, used a total of 3 or 4 times in 7 years) and contribute a hell of a lot, with money from India being sent over to me to spend here rather than the other way around.

The US weirdly (because of it's history in the last 100 years) has a much healthier attitude to talking about race than we do. Whilst black comedians can pretty much say what they want here a routine like this from Louis CK would cause outrage had it been done by say Ricky Gervais or Jimmy Carr...

This is something I especially can't stand, people are way too uptight about race. It kinda fits in with the attitude of some people that you some how can't be racist to white people, despite the fact that very thing is.

Great another Islamaphobe type thread.

What is your cultural identity if you are going to relate it to clothing? Burburry caps?

Taking issue with burkas has nothing to do with fearing Islam. The burka isn't even an Islamic requirement. A lot of Muslims are against it. I can't stand burkas, and I am in no way anti-Muslim.

Can't stand the place; traffic, too many foreigners, arrogant rude people and cyclists.

Thanks for the high level of thought that went into this OP. Truely award winning. :)
London....pros and cons. Mostly pros though. I personally love it...in small to medium doses. Day in day out I can do it, for a few weeks (training courses) but to live and breath there permanently...dunno.

Yes he says they are all scumbags. He calls them a number of names but i forgot it.

I'm talking directly about you though. Is his hatred periodic, ie if you travel north of it having been south, does he un-hate, or is everything south of the m25 permanently tainted? Also I'd like to know the exact logistics of the "hate" area. I mean, the m25 is circular, so does he only hate things directly south of the m25's reach across London? Or is his hatred spawned from the northernmost tip, an east west line drawn across the planet and hatred branded from that line downwards?

My uncle from Newcastle hates london, he actually hates anything south of m25.

I am not fan of cities that much, i think I am more of coastal town person. But I do like the extra money and ease of finding a job.

Your uncle from Newcastle sounds like a moron.

"Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."

Samuel Johnson

Tbh.. if people don't like living in cities then that's one thing.... but as far as comparisons with other UK cities are concerned there aren't any others in the same league as London.

If anyone is going to compare it to another city then compare it to New York, Paris, Tokyo etc...

Its a perfectly legit comparison to make between a capital and other cities within the same nation.

If one were to try to compare London to Baden-Baden, then one should have a good reason for it.

don't you live in north london ? which is populated with black/brown people - i do and i don't find it annoying in anyway :/ i just don't get what the problem is with other people what does colour have to do with anything? what does being from another part of the world have anything to do with the way you are? we all are humans and we all have the same right to be where ever we want on the damn planet.

I do live in North London, and no, hardly any ethnic people where I live or play.
