I've lost my northern accent. Leicester is to blame.

Firstly - I hate you Leicester.

After completing University whilst studying at DeMontfraud in Leicester for 5 years, my northern charm and accent has all but dissapeared. :(

I feel violated that my accent was slowly infected and I didn't even realise it until I came back up Norf and my mates said "what the **** has happened to your accent man?". Even years later the Leicester accent has mutated into mine and I can't seem to shake it off. Will vocal couching bring it back? Or am I forever diseased?

Please help a friendly Mancunian.

Live in Manchester again for a while (3/4 years or so maybe) and you'll pick it back up.

I have a good friend who was born and bred in Leicester and he still sounds like a northern monkey to southern ears. You are probably still identifiable.

to be honest it isn't a great loss. Now the world is your oyster as oppose to asking if people want fries with that as you were originally destined to do.

;)

What? He was at university for 5 years... that's 2 years longer than anyone else.

So therefore no matter he hates the place?

What's that got to do with me? You menk

Oh give over, you know full well you were picking at the university choice rather than the amount of time he spent there.

Naturally you will deny it but whatever. Thanks for calling me a menk as well, appreciate it ;).

Since I moved to London from SA, I think my accent has actually improved since I am forced to enunciate more. In SA the vowel sounds are more guttural, so "house" is pronounced "hus", ice is pronounced "us" and "light" is pronounced "lut".

Also they call traffic lights robots. No joke.

I grew up in Birmingham (The black country) & have lost most of my accent since moving to the south coast a few years ago.

I didn't foresee this additional benefit.

I've been in Leeds 7 years and thankfully haven't been tainted by a northern accent. I am still southern as they come.

Where were you from? Cape Town didn't have that kind of pronunciation.

The amount of weird looks I got from late night cabs in my first few years here when I told them to turn after the robots. :D

Apparently the only tells of my saffa heritage is the use of 'mom' and how I say 'awf' rather than off. The rest is like some posh boy, so I am told.
