Advice on PSU please?

Hi guys,

I've pretty much been upgrading my rig in chunks for over a year now and the outstanding component I haven't upgraded is my PSU.

I think it is a OCZ GameXStream 600 Watt. The 600 watt part I am sure of. I bought this power supply when I built my first core2duo machine which must have been back in ~2007/8 I think.

My current system is as follows;

CPU: Intel i5 2500K Overclocked to 3.8GHz w/ Antec Kuhler 620
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68AP-D3
Memory: Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GTX670 2GB OC Edition
Soundcard: Asus Xonar D2X 7.1 PCI-E (requires 4 FDD power connector)
Hard-drives: 2x Corsair Force Series 3 120GB SSD's @ Raid 0 and some Maxtor 300GB storage drive.

Based on the above specs of my rig, is it worth upgrading (just checked OCZ website and it appears to be EOL now).

If so can anyone make any recommendations?

My budget is around £60-£120, I would prefer a modular power supply but I wouldn't say no to a decent non-modular, it wouldn't be the end of the world :P.

Thanks in advanced.

I would go for This

I don't see why you'd need 850W.

As your motherboard doesn't support x8/x8 SLI, that doesn't really become an attractive option.

Modular is brilliant for cable management. And who doesn't want a quiet PC. :)

Well apart from the age of my current PSU, having a quieter PSU is also a driver for upgrading. Over the last year it has become so noisy which I think could be down to power demands.

I got until the end of the month to decide but I think I'm tempted by the BeQuiet PSU so far.

*edit* Thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I'm after very similar advice too. I hope you don't mind, didn't want to start another thread on the same topic.

Would a 430W Antec Truepower Trio PSU run the following:

i3 2120, Z77 chipset mobo, HD 6870? There's minimal extra attachments, just a DVDRW drive and a couple of small USB items like a wireless dongle.

Bump - any ideas on this before I go off and think about ordering a new PSU?

I know it's only 430W but it is also a really good PSU, if a bit old now.

hmmm I would say no. You will need two PCIE power connectors, and I'm not fond of molex adapters. Usually means the PSU is not designed for that kind of load.

It's Seasonic, triple 16A rails, 386W @ 12V. so 'theoretically' yes, but sounds a bit too ancient for me.

Total system power consumption would be around 250-300W tops.

YOUR BASKET
1 x BeQuiet Pure Power L8 630W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply - With 120mm Silent Wing Fan Built in £79.99
1 x Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 600W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £65.99
1 x OCZ ZT 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply £63.98
1 x Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 500W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £43.98
Total : £266.54 (includes shipping : £10.50).

Plenty of good modular PSUs to choose from there. Weekly offers change tomoz so prices can change.

I have the bequiet L8 630W, I only paid £60 odd for it several months back. It's a great quiet PSU but as you can see there are cheaper alternatives

Seems like there has been a good range recommended. As for hijacking my thread, I'll let you off this time ;).

Having looked at all of the suggestions relevent to my post and they all appear to match what I need so I guess it's just a matter of homing in on which PSU is quieter really. As I said I got until the end of the month (pay day!) having spent this month buying other gadgets :o.

So thanks for the suggestions, I have more than enough time to make a decision before purchase.

Thanks

If it's become noisy and wasn't, then maybe it requires a clean with compressed air.

U want the corsair ones that the fan only spins up when it is needed. Not sure what model it is.

This. But the AX series is pretty expensive: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-051-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1084

But this is very quiet, since the fan doesn't spin until only a certain load, making it one of the quietest PSUs out out there.

And if your current PSU is getting noisy, maybe it means there's too much dust inside restricting air flow?

Well because the PSU is EOL and out of warrenty I opened it up around 3 weeks and removed a tremendous amount of dust which probably equated to around 4 years worth.

I have drawn the conclusion that maybe the components are too demanding on the PSU.

Cost isn't an issue for me given the fact I am fortunate with my job and earnings but I have no issue with the cost if I get the quality and performance out of the component.
